We Need A "What Genre Is This" Thread

As the title says, we need a official thread in general music were we can ask what genre a artist belongs to, becuase I know some artist that I can not classify.

Like David Bowie, what genre is he in?

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-18-2010 02:46 PM

No we don't

rammetal7 06-18-2010 02:47 PM

Then atleast tell me what sub genre David Bowie is in.

Be more constructive with your feedback, please.

EDIT: Thanks for telling me james1.

Glam Rock/Art Rock

What about his Soul & Jungle albums?

rammetal7 06-18-2010 02:50 PM

The song I was tagging is "Fame", so Glam Rock/Art Rock sounds like the right genre.

James 06-18-2010 02:50 PM

I meant in General if I was counting every album it would be quite a long list.

rammetal7 06-18-2010 02:55 PM

I wish there was a website that states what subgenre an artist is, some come close to this idea, but the problem is that not all artists get a agreeable tag, like Sputnik Music, who just bluntly classified David Bowie as "Rock".

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-18-2010 02:57 PM

Why don't you just choose one you like & use that?

rammetal7 06-18-2010 03:00 PM

Some artists are harder to classify then others.

homesick.alien 06-18-2010 03:38 PM

Do we honestly need to classify though? Many artists overlap a bajillion different genres, if they stuck to one genre only, their music would be awfully boring.

That is what the slash is for,
Example: Children Of Bodom is Power/Death Metal.

Agreed. Just post in the artist's official thread if you feel like you need to classify them. Or better yet, read the artist's thread first for clues.

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 06-18-2010 07:37 PM

check an artist's tags on http://www.last.fm/

theyre generally accurate.

Not really.

No it isn't. Maybe bits of information might be incorrect, but if you're looking for something as simple as genres Wiki is sufficient.

rammetal7 06-18-2010 08:53 PM

Wikipedia says that NOFX is:
Punk rock
Skate punk
Ska punk
Melodic hardcore
Hardcore punk

What to choose?

Exactly. I wouldn't get something like statistics from Wikipedia unless they were well-annotated, but something like a description of a musical genre is exactly what the site is great for.

Why do you have to chose?

So what Music Banter needs is a thread where one member says they're Punk rock! and another says No! They're melodic hardcore? You do know genres aren't mutually exclusive. They can cross over, the genre of albums can change through out a bands career.

rammetal7 06-18-2010 08:55 PM

For me, The hard part is choosing, but I will try to learn more about the genres it suggest to me so I can make the right choice.

Make the choice to recognize that very few bands fit neatly into one genre.

TheCunningStunt 06-18-2010 08:58 PM

3 pages.

The opening post should've just been "Bands and artists aren't tied to one genre." then closed.

True but there's so many damn genre terms out there you're bound to find something that fits, no matter how off the wall it is.

When all else fails, pull something out of your ass. That's how new genres are born.

Grunge.

rammetal7 06-18-2010 10:51 PM

OK, since nobody else likes my idea, then I guess we can end this thread.

James 06-19-2010 02:48 AM

NOFX are pop-punk.

avanthi 12-04-2012 03:04 AM

Franco Pepe Kalle 12-04-2012 05:59 PM

This thread is one of the lamest threads I have read. So lame.

Isbjørn 06-18-2013 09:02 AM

MAJOR BUMP! We need a thread like this.

I've seen Paradise by the Dashboard Light get labelled as progressive rock, do you think that is correct? I've seen it labelled as rock opera too, which may sound right.
