Labels

I know most people don't pay any attention to the label a band is under, but there are some labels that only accept SPECIFIC bands. And if you like one band under that label, you'll probably enjoy most or all of the bands under the same label (CandyRat, ie.)

So what are some of your favourite labels?

Alfred 08-07-2010 10:40 AM

Relapse, Deathwish, Temporary Residence, and Level Plane would be some of mine.

Dayvan Cowboy 08-07-2010 10:54 AM

Warp! there is some great stuff on that label.

Nuclear Blast and Century Media have a lot of the artists I really like on them. Epitaph and ANTI are pretty decent with their spread, along with Rhymesayers and Quantum. At the end of the day though, Labels are something I really don't take much notice of, I mean I understand their importance and shit to getting the music I care about to me, but you take Nevermore off of Century and put them on Nuclear and I probably wouldn't notice.

Yeah, Epitaph is pretty good. Quite a number of crap bands, but also a lot of bands I like.

Apparently Weezer just signed with them, hopefully a sign that they are returning to their roots.

Yeah, I was really surprised to hear that Weezer was going independant. I hope the same thing.

some old favourites:

SST Records - I was seriously OBSESSED with this label when I was 15/16

Touch & Go - another old favourite, loads of good noise rock and post hardcore as well as some great early hardcore like Negative Approach and the Necros.

Gravity Records - focused more on emo, screamo and post hardcore bands, Antioch Arrow, Heroin, Mohinder, Clikatat Ikatowi, Angel Hair, Young Ginns and early Unwound were my favs on this one. A big favourite of mine when I was about 16.

and some more recently discovered favs:

Kranky - home to lots of excellent ambient, drone, early post-rock stuff. I think if you like one band on this label, chances are you'll enjoy the vast majority of the rest, like you said in your first post. Labradford, Stars of the Lid, Windy & Carl, Bowery Electric, Godspeed You Black Emperor's first EP, Low, Dead Texan, Jessica Bailiff, etc. All fantastic stuff.

Flying Nun - New Zealand label, and an incredibly consistent one. The Clean, The Verlaines and Bailter Space are my favourites but literally EVERY band I've heard who's on this label is well above average.

I put a lot of stock in labels actually, not really with music before the 80s though for whatever reason. There are millions of really great ones.

I was about'a say, most of the crap that MTV puts out nowadays is purely marketing. So labels are important.
