Bands with Better Lyrics than Bob Dylan?

WTF is this madness?:

Old-Wizard.com » Top 10 Bands with Better Lyrics than Bob Dylan

Never even heard of 8 of these bands.

MoonlitSunshine 10-29-2010 06:05 PM

I'm going to assume the bands you have heard of on that list are Radiohead and Oasis, considering that they're both ridiculously famous, but seriously, you've never heard of Pulp, or The Smiths? Wow.

As for whether he's right, no, probably not, not for all of them anyway, by a long shot. I might not be a particular fan of bob dylan as a musician, but he's a brilliant poet; his music is his lyrics. There are people whose lyrics I prefer, from a personal point of view, but certainly for being renowned for one particular thing, the only person who comes to mind immediately who is as well known for their lyrics as Dylan is, is Leonard Cohen.

TheCunningStunt 10-29-2010 06:10 PM

Yeah, what they said.
8 of them, really?

The writer lost any credibility when they said Oasis have better lyrics than Bob Dylan.
Drunken nonsense rhyming fishes with dishes is better than thought provoking/philosophical/political lyrics. Yeah, okay.

The Smiths yes, maybe. But Dylan was a damn good lyricist.
What a dreadful list.

loveissucide 10-29-2010 06:16 PM

Radiohead-surrealist,stream of consciousness and oblique in the manner of David Byrne and Michael Stipe.I get the impression the music was written first on a lot of tracks.

The Verve and Oasis: pseudo-profound anthemity

ABC and The La's: One brilliant debut with very strong lyrics, but hardly a sustainable and enduring body of work open to infinite interpretation.

Pulp and The Smiths:Amongst the best songwriters of their respective generations, yes.But "Better Than Dylan" is a massive stretch.

Zero credibility, Oasis are terrible, etc., etc.

loveissucide 10-29-2010 06:22 PM

I like Mercury Rev plenty, but this is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever read.

Quote:

Get to “Opus 40” and you will get an analysis of the feminine figure with objectivity and grace unknown to anything in Dylan’s work. Past Deserters’ Songs though is The Secret Migration. This album was a lyrical masterpiece. Check out the first song on the album “Secret for a Song”, and you will hear a haunting sound about the deep forest and world unknown to people without imagination beyond “social commentary”, like Dylan.
Considering Dylan had moved beyond social commentary by the time of Blonde On Blonde, which is predominantly about the feminine mystique( as is quite a lot of his post-motorcycle crash work), that is genuinely ludricous.

Funniest of all, none of those bands include the handful of people who have a body of lyrics that compare (IMO Nick Cave,Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Elvis Costello)
AND he gets Neil Tennant( who does have a fantastic body of work) and Martin Fry mixed up.

Epic Fail is Epic.

Oasis aren't terrible, they're alright.
But their lyrics are self admitted drunken ramblings, rhyming any words that pop into Noel's head.

I like The La's debut a lot as well, but better lyrics than Dlyan.

Man, the link at the bottom is even worse:

I stand by my statement that Oasis are terrible, I only emit elitism because girls don't talk to me and I use my hatred of Oasis as a safe cushioning from the realization that my life is an empty void, etc., etc.

TheCunningStunt 10-29-2010 06:39 PM

2. You name off great bands that continually receive accolades from modern press
...Like Oasis?

Jesus Christ. I'm a little dumbfounded.

Well, the guy has a video game logo on his website, so clearly music isn't his strong point.

clutnuckle 10-29-2010 06:41 PM

9. You don’t like Oasis

.... LOLOLOLOL

HAHAHAHHAHA

You can ****ing tell who the writer of this magazine is a fan of. Absolute biased moron.

RVCA 10-29-2010 06:41 PM

I find comfort in knowing that no one agrees with the writer of the articles, be it here or in the comments on his own articles.

Better walks?! What?! They didn't name a single thing that has ANYTHING TO DO WITH MUSIC. Utter crap. Troll articles galore.

TheElectricSlug 10-29-2010 06:43 PM

Gotta wonder if they believe this, or they are doing it to start flame wars.

TheCunningStunt 10-29-2010 06:44 PM

You don't know nothing about music if you've slightly overgrew your hair whilst retaining an office job. Dare I read on?

Actually, the comments seem to be better than the articles.

clutnuckle 10-29-2010 06:45 PM

After 2-3 lists, I cease to believe that this guy can be serious, so I'll take my sanity back and just have a good laugh at this guy's expense.

No applause, though. This isn't even good trolling.

"How many times do we hear this? How many times do we have to hear that Dylan is be all and end all of music? What is with all this idolization? And how come every time these Dylan idolizers are called out on why they like Dylan they give the same banal reasons for idolization like “He was one of the great American Poets?”"

What? How is he not a poet?

TheCunningStunt 10-29-2010 06:46 PM

Yep, the 10 reasons why Oasis are better than The Beatles confirmed it for me. The guy is a

They actually have Noel Gallagher on the top 10 guitarists of all time!

What a joke:

Old-Wizard.com » Top 10 Guitarists of All Time

"So **** the Stevie Ray Vaughn’s and Eric Clapton’s with their boring ass blues wanking. This list isn’t for the old farts whose conception of good guitar playing is limited to the most banal modes of style. This list of the more adventurous at heart who don’t hear just plain technical musicianship, but aesthetically pleasing sounding styles and innovative work that influenced guitarist past their own records."

Utter bullsh**

Queen Boo 10-29-2010 10:17 PM

I thought it was weird that none of the lyrics listed as examples were political......
Thats the biggest reason to respect Bob Dylan. He made music that forced people to think about the world around them.

MoonlitSunshine 10-30-2010 08:24 AM

5. You Listen to new U2 - well, we know at least one person on this forum would agree to that :P

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 10-30-2010 11:24 AM

I'm guessing the person who wrote this article equates lyrical quality to concentration of pretensious trite.

Tor_Hershman 10-30-2010 12:26 PM

When I read that Dylan was doin’ a Christmas album I wrote parody lyrics to “The Times They Are A Changing” and they go something, well – exactly, like this and moi thinks that they are better (After the fact of the Xmas CD) that Dylans
Pretend you’re a sweet Christian
Pretend you’re a hurt Jew
Pretend you’re a Buddhist or Satanist, too
At end you ain’t nothin’ but DNA goo
Preorder get Zeromas savings
The more sell, the more you get
It’s jungle or zoo
For the times they ain’t a-changin’

Niglett 10-30-2010 01:23 PM

The only thing I do agree with him is the reading Rolling Stone comment. I don't agree that just because you read it makes you ignorant to music, but I do agree that Rolling Stone does put out some irritating garbage. Especially their lists.

Ugh.

Other than that, this guy is a moron.

I wasn't aware they were even remotely well-known outside Ireland. They're regarded as has-beens within it.

True Dat. They lasted in popularity for about a year, as far as I remember!

TheElectricSlug 10-31-2010 07:31 PM

Still, a good band though.
