the original is great, but it was so long until I heard it instead of all the bad covers and samples

That is going wayyyy back. I haven't seen [MERIT] for such a long time. That is if you don't count the time last week when he was flying in a pyramid shape UFO over a Navy ship.

[MERIT]'s conspiracies > his taste

I like this one better than the YB's:

I've been slowly realizing just how incredible 10cc was too. I feel like I've been living under a planet sized rock.

:bowdown:10cc yes incredibly incredible....

Not so much a cover, but just playing about for fun...

Marvin Gaye now the real ma coy...

Now that I've been posting just a bit, I'll do a couple.

In >90% of cases, I think covers are redundant or worse than the original. However, there are occasional exceptions.

One of those exceptions is Loudon Wainwright III's version of Daughter. The original is by Peter Blegvad. Loudon dresses it up in a more country style and it fits the song really well. It gives it a stronger identity and makes it a little more fun. Loudon also seems like such a warm character and adds a lot of heart to most of the stuff he plays, this included.

Then I also adore this song which may or may not be a Bo Diddley cover. I'm unsure, but the track listing has it as "A Modern Lesson [Bo Diddley]" so I've assumed that it is indeed a cover. Now, I'll admit I don't know the original in this case, but I am pretty sure that it doesn't sound anything like Aksak Maboul's take on this.

It's got cash registers and a parrot in it and it is one of my favourite bits of avant-garde music ever recorded.

as worthy as the original is

I don't think any cover of Tom Waits is better than the original, but this cover at least measures up to the ethos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3ce7uDRo28

Fairly certain the guitar isn't plugged into anything
Singer missing the appropriate amount of teeth
The words are mostly there, and when they aren't it's close enough
Fret buzz doesn't even phase the guy

This is the true cover of Waits because the songs are supposed to come from unfiltered humanity. There are so many covers of his that feel like they can improve on the original with slick production, funky arrangements, **** that. Unless it's a hobo singing with a missing limb, it ain't Waits.

happy with this version...

I'm now trying to think of a song Foo Fighters covered that was better than the original (It's certainly not Darling Nikki). Probably "Carry on Wayward Son."
