LastFM's Best of 2010

Best of 2010 - #40 - Kylie Minogue

You might be a little shocked by #1

James 12-15-2010 03:42 PM

Eww.

Alfred 12-15-2010 03:52 PM

terrible list, there's like 3 albums that I liked on that list... ke$ha at number one? I thought last.fm attracted more seasoned, discerning listeners than that.

Zer0 12-15-2010 03:54 PM

There's a few albums i like on that list, High Violet, Broken Bells, Teen Dream, Sainthood and The Suburbs. There's plenty of crap on it though.

Charlemagne 12-15-2010 03:58 PM

I liked some of their inclusions (Tegan and Sara, The National, Arcade Fire) but overall it was a pretty awful list.

someonecompletelyrandom 12-15-2010 03:59 PM

Mmmmhmmm...

clutnuckle 12-15-2010 04:00 PM

Not really surprising in the least.

Kirby 12-15-2010 04:02 PM

Massive Attack
(One of the songs from the) Linkin Park (album)
The Black Keys
Rihanna (because she's my girlfriend, or something)
Eminem
Vampire Weekend
Gorillaz

Those are cool releases.

someonecompletelyrandom 12-15-2010 04:07 PM

Agreed, Kirby. And I indeed expected all of those to make the list. But you just have to wonder, who scrobbles Ke$ha? She's a fine pop artist and what not, but I always pictured to last.fm crowd being a bit more... into different music than the average pop consumer.

Paedantic Basterd 12-15-2010 04:08 PM

She's an abomination.

James 12-15-2010 04:08 PM

Wooh, more people appreciate Rihanna than just me!

trapdoor 12-15-2010 04:32 PM

why anyone would be surprised at this is beyond me.

yup.

CanwllCorfe 12-15-2010 04:47 PM

Checked a couple people out that I hadn't heard yet.. (Vampire Weekend, Arcade Fire, Mumford & Sons). Kinda cool, nothing I'm too into though.

someonecompletelyrandom 12-15-2010 04:48 PM

I suppose I really should give Vampire Weekend a try.

CanwllCorfe 12-15-2010 04:52 PM

I heard quite a bit o' chit chat about them, but just never remembered to give em a listen. They're alright I guess. Not my thing.

Seltzer 12-15-2010 04:54 PM

To be honest, I think that top 10 was quite predictable. And for all the indie that seems to have made it into the top 40 (some of which I've never heard of), Ke$ha ends up taking the top spot

Zer0 12-15-2010 04:55 PM

I bought Vampire Weekend's Contra on CD earlier in the year and i wasn't too impressed with it. There are a couple of good tunes on it but for the most part it's a bit bleh. But you might like it so there's no harm giving it a go.

someonecompletelyrandom 12-15-2010 04:57 PM

I'll probably give the self titled a shot first. I'm not into indie rock at all, but maybe this will change that.

Their self titled is a fair bit better but it's still only good at best. I don't listen to Vampire Weekend that much but they do have a few nice tunes.

LoathsomePete 12-15-2010 05:14 PM

The only thing that surprised me about that list was that Janelle Monae's The ArchAndriod didn't make it on there. I figured out of all the albums from 2010 that I liked, that would be one I would expect to see on bigger name site's top albums of 2010. But instead I'm greeted with Ke$ha's face in the number one spot... oh well no sense in moaning about something I have no real control over.

Last.fm's crowd isn't seasoned, even though I also assumed the same thing a couple years back. It's actually marketed towards part-time music listeners more than (or at least just as much as) people who experiment with less popular releases. Websites like RYM and the like are a lot more tasteful, as the members there usually cross a certain border - any personal 'mildly' interested in music would like to have a website that keeps track of what they hear (last.fm), but only somebody who really enjoys it enough to get out there and try new things would go through the effort of cataloging, rating, reviewing, etc. (RYM). That'd be why last.fm's overall charts tend to suck out loud, or at least lack diversity and eclecticism.

Paedantic Basterd 12-15-2010 06:00 PM

I think that lastFM's growth in usage might be in part to blame. I believe this was done in 2009 as well as 08, and while I remember Katy Perry and Lady Gaga making them, I also remember Fleet Foxes being very high at the end of the year. Then again, I know a number of people who listen to Kesha and are otherwise well adjusted listeners.

Key 12-15-2010 09:11 PM

I noticed Arcade Fire and Vampire Weekend right away. I'm still looking through the whole list. But...that's pretty disappointing that Kesha is #1, like really? That just makes me wonder how fast Justin Bieber will make it to #1

swim 12-15-2010 10:30 PM

The people who do listen pop music listen to less artists total upping there plays for said artists. While us hip kids listen to a billion bands and don't agree on what's good anyway. So it makes mathematical sense. These charts are shit.

I had a discussion with a friend over whether or not mumford could make a 2010 list and I say no. We live in the internet age. If it's released anywhere then it's released everywhere.
