are you joking?

Aside from writing about the troubles they sound like any other punk band at the time.

The Cranberries! Zombie is an awesome song. Also Two Door Cinema Club, they're quite an alright listen if you want something simple and lively. All the really good stuff has already been mentioned though.

Try The Corrs - they have sort of a folk sound, especially their earlier stuff.

I have friends studying abroad at NUI Galway this year :)

Actually The Boomtown Rats' have a song called I Hate Mondays which is hilarious, not punky, but it's also not very Irish sounding. Stiff Little Fingers also don't sound remotely Irish, just so you know.

I'd say any of Flogging Molly's popular songs (Drunk Lullabies, Seven Deadly Sins, etc) are the better Irish punk songs. I don't like the Dropkick Murphys though so I'm biased.

Villagers are so good. I feel really bad for the dude though, being named Collin O'Brien and making music that sounds kinda similar to Bright Eyes.

Lots of suggestions in the Country, Folk and World forum; the Good Irish Bands thread includes a lively debate about the merits of U2.

Almost everyone I`ve played it to likes the cd Irish Heartbeat by Van Morrison and The Chieftains. If you don`t put some of that on yr mixtape, you may never see your housemate dancing to Marie`s Wedding :

Step we gaily, on we go
Heel for heel and toe for toe
Arm and arm and row and row
All for Marie`s wedding.

(O.K not strictly Irish but still essential)
