Feelin' Groovy? It's Disco Week!

Hey there brethren! Now's the time to get your groove on because disco week is finally upon us. It's time to celebrate all the best music the Chopins and Tchaikovskys of cool had to offer.

The all knowing Wikipedia has this to say about Disco :

Disco was a reaction by New York City's mainstream as well as black, and Hispanic or Latino and heterosexuals against both the domination of rock music and the demonisation of dance music by the counterculture during this period. Women embraced disco as well, and the music eventually expanded to several other popular groups of the time.

Musical influences include funk, Latin and soul music. The disco sound has soaring, often reverberated vocals over a steady "four-on-the-floor" beat, an eighth note (quaver) or sixteenth note (semi-quaver) hi-hat pattern with an open hi-hat on the off-beat, and a prominent, syncopated electric bass line sometimes consisting of octaves. The Fender Jazz Bass is often associated with disco bass lines, because the instrument itself has a very prominent 'voice' in the musical mix. In most disco tracks, strings, horns, electric pianos, and electric guitars create a lush background sound. Orchestral instruments such as the flute are often used for solo melodies, and unlike in rock, lead guitar is rarely used.

Dynomite!

So, let's see some disco tributes.

I can't say I listen to a lot of disco, but one of my favourite hits from the genre would be Franki Valli's theme song from Grease. What can I say? It's just really catchy, I think. :)

yeah, I haven't had a period in time when I listened to straight disco in ages but here are some of my favorites.

ohio players - love rollercoaster

The Jacksons - Shake your body down to the ground

Bee Gees - You should be dancing

The Commodores - Brickhouse

I'd like to know something.....I know there are funk songs that were played in disco clubs so does that make the funk song disco or is it strictly just funk?

As a soldier from the Disco wars, I can say this is the best thing to happen to Disco.

You've obviously missed the point of this theme thread. I think you've also missed what the spirit of the weekly themes is which is that even if you hate disco, this is the one week of the year where you don't, or at least try not to. If you think it's awful, this week you should play along and try to open your mind just a little bit and embrace the awfulness if that's how you feel. You have at least 51 weeks of the year and a number of other threads where you can practice your dislike.

More disco love please!
