Stuck on a Musical Tangent

What I mean by this is finding a band that absolutely envelopes you and you begin to look for more bands similar to the one you love or for the band's genre(s).I had this happen when I got into Hendrix. 1) I downloaded around 80 songs by him, 2) I looked for tons of blues musicians, 3) I looked for psychedelic musicians, and 4) I looked for musicians similar to Hendrix (Robin Trower, Stevie Ray Vaughan, etc). I'm currently stuck on two genres: punk rock and avant-garde. Of course, this doesn't mean I'll stop looking into these genres later on, and it definitely doesn't mean that I won't look into any other genres now. It's just I'm stuck on this "tangent" type mindset. So, has anyone ever had this happen to them?

Rock In Opposition ideology. Love the music, love the attitude, the philosophy. There's nothing I don't love about it. Anti-materialistic, pro musician, anti-gimmick music. Focusing on trying to stretch the creative bounds of progressive rock by breaking convention.

I've been exploring fairly heavily projects that Cutler has supported, and feel it's a complete gateway into a world of music from the 70s, and 80s that mainstream music has somewhat deprived me of:

Art Zoyd
Univers Zero
Samla Mammas Mana
Thinking Plague
Henry Cow
Art Bears

Brilliant bands. He also helped guide me to finding Soft Machine, Residents, Negativland, Faust, and many other very brilliant acts. Shame it's all dated(he did most of what he did in the 70s-80s), but the man just has an amazing dedication/taste to the avant garde progressive genre.

All great bands (Frith is in two of them, I see). Never heard of Samla Mammas Mana, though.

They're Swedish carnival-fusion. Very virtuoso yet very silly beautiful music.

You've basically just described my whole pattern of listening to music. Last year, for example, I went through a month or two of listening to mostly 90s gangsta rap, one album leading to another. Then I abruptly got on a stoner doom streak. Then dupstep. Then death metal. Then bebop. These days I'm on a streak of checking out experimental music, which has conveniently coincided with the experimental music listen club starting up. :)

I'm on a big Post-Rock kick right now. I was listening to Mogwai's Tracy the other day, a song I used to love, but haven't listened to in a while. It remeinded me how much I love Post-Rock. If anyone wants to reccemend me some albums to get, that would be great.

I can completely understand that. While I'll remain open to listening to all sorts of music, pretty much whatever's thrown at me, I still get on these kicks of listening to music in a similar vein.

Right now, it's music of the more jammy variety and jazz. My computer died a few months ago, and that's why I'd not been on here as much for a bit. When I finally got a computer back, I filled it with what I'd been listening to when I didn't have a computer, and embellishing on that with other masters in the genres.

My iTunes is currently almost exclusively made up of Phish, other "jam bands", free jazz, classic jazz, classical music, jamtronica, electronica, and psych-folk / avant-garde folk. Really, all of these genres go hand in hand when listening, and I guess I'm on that sort of kick right now.

I guess I'm more on a Phish kick than anything, but that always happens when I'm going to see Phish / one of the members of the band in concert in the near future.

I guess I've sort of always done this, too. Back in high school, I got really into Queen, and that led me into seeking out music from all of the members' solo projects, bands that influenced them, bands they played with, bands from the same era, etc.

Well, it's good to see that others have this "problem."

This has been my pattern of music discovery pretty much since my early teens.
