I'm currently stuck on two genres: punk rock and avant-garde. Of course, this doesn't mean I'll stop looking into these genres later on, and it definitely doesn't mean that I won't look into any other genres now. It's just I'm stuck on this "tangent" type mindset. So, has anyone ever had this happen to them?

I can completely understand that. While I'll remain open to listening to all sorts of music, pretty much whatever's thrown at me, I still get on these kicks of listening to music in a similar vein.
Right now, it's music of the more jammy variety and jazz. My computer died a few months ago, and that's why I'd not been on here as much for a bit. When I finally got a computer back, I filled it with what I'd been listening to when I didn't have a computer, and embellishing on that with other masters in the genres.
My iTunes is currently almost exclusively made up of Phish, other "jam bands", free jazz, classic jazz, classical music, jamtronica, electronica, and psych-folk / avant-garde folk. Really, all of these genres go hand in hand when listening, and I guess I'm on that sort of kick right now.
I guess I'm more on a Phish kick than anything, but that always happens when I'm going to see Phish / one of the members of the band in concert in the near future.
I guess I've sort of always done this, too. Back in high school, I got really into Queen, and that led me into seeking out music from all of the members' solo projects, bands that influenced them, bands they played with, bands from the same era, etc.
