Having said that, I dislike Jazz with vocals alltogether.

I'm the same way. There's the occasional jazz song with vocals that I like but I generally prefer my jazz without.

s_k 04-06-2011 05:40 AM

I can't think of any jazz song with vocals I like right now.
Yeah, some louis armstrong coming from an old wind-up grammophone is fun.
But apart from that?

Howard the Duck 04-06-2011 07:06 AM

Manhattan Transfer?

oddball 04-06-2011 08:46 AM

I much prefer having words if I want to join in - like in the car and I want to sing along

but if it's background music i'm happy regardless of words or not :=-)

Howard the Duck 04-06-2011 08:54 AM

some songs work with vocals, some songs don't, if you want my 2 cents

RUNB4ICU 04-16-2011 10:17 AM

Dude, try to learn an instrument! Let's say a guitar, or the drums, even the piano. Once you see the beauty of playing and the complexity of it you'll start to realize that some of the most beautiful songs ever are mostly instrumental.

snagglepuss 04-16-2011 08:17 PM

i usually prefer instrumentals to songs with lyrics. A lot of the time words just get in the way of beautiful musical passages. And it dosen't have to be classical or jazz either. If you want some really moving rock instrumentals, try listening to Ozric Tentacles or Acid Mothers Temple.

starrynight 04-17-2011 12:45 AM

Some jazz vocals can be too sentimental and drag out the music too much. You find that the original versions of some songs covered in the 50s and later were originally much quicker in tempo.

BTown 04-17-2011 10:02 AM

I cna get into some fully instrumental albums such as stuff like Lightning Bolt, Hella, or 65daysofstatic but most of the time its pretty hard..

if there's an instrumental trck on album by a band i already really liek its not as much of a biggie. here's a favorite

TockTockTock 04-17-2011 12:05 PM

Instrumental rock is pretty much the only genre I don't like to be instrumental.
Although, I do make a few exceptions sometimes, such as with math rock, avant-prog, experimental rock, noise rock, etc.

Stone Birds 04-17-2011 05:48 PM

YES!!! there are a few instrumentals i like but most are just kind of meh, and there are very few instrumental songs that wouldn't like more if they had vocals.

i just like lyrics and vocals

Howard the Duck 04-17-2011 08:05 PM

i don't listen much to instrumental stuff besides Classical and Jazz

Calexico's instrumentals are pretty good, Mogwai's so-so

Kinda Blue 04-18-2011 03:47 AM

I never had any problems getting into instrumental music, then again I didn't really try until about a year and a half ago, when I started listening to jazz.

MoonlitSunshine 04-18-2011 04:38 AM

There are definitely situations where i love an instrumental piece, even to the point that there are songs to which I prefer an instrumental version. Lyrics, however... I've sung in choirs since I was 15, I think that for me has increased the importance of lyrics within music. While I do see the voice as just another instrument that has to fit into the music, I do still put great emphasis on the lyrics of a song. It doesn't have to be that they need to be about something poignant, but I like the rhythms and feel of different words, and things like that. There's a lot to be said for lyrics and how they can change a song, and I often pay great attention to what's being sung.

That, and it's a lot easier to sing along :P

For me it all depends. In Black Metal, I see vocals as just another instrument. I can't make out one single word they're saying, and I don't mind. For me it's ALL about the feeling, and pretty much not at all about the content. It's nice when there's a mix though!

I feel like this song(MY NEW FAVOURITE SONG, HOLY ****) uses the singers voice as an instrument really, really well.

jackhammer 04-18-2011 06:33 PM

Sometimes I like to guess what a band is thinking when they are making instrumental songs or even long passages of play and don't need a vocalist to almost 'explain' how they are feeling. I can gain my own interpretation from the music they play.

A saxophone solo dropped into a song (even though it's not the height of cool) can say so much more than a vocalist at times.

I have found some 2 minute instrumentals on albums more satisfying than the 30 odd minutes with vocals surrounding it.

captaincaptain 04-18-2011 06:39 PM

One of my favorite sub genres of music is surf music. There are quite a few instrumental songs.

Husky McDump 04-19-2011 11:50 AM

Never really had a problem with it. I don't like all of it to be honest.

Electronic music is so much better with out vocals to me.

Cheesy club vocals over house music drives me nuts.

pooka 04-19-2011 02:44 PM

dinosaurs go rawr rawr rawr...i think. thats what skwisgaar tells me.

Am I alone in this? Are there others who feel the same way?

Don't try to force it. Music is about indulging yourself in a sonic experience that appeals to you.

If you don't like it, don't waste your time. There are plenty of other tracks in the sea.

GERD 04-25-2011 12:38 PM

A couple of instrumental albums I really love are Carpe Omnium by Atlantis and All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone by Explosions In The Sky. I'm not a big fan of instrumental either, but those records are lovely.

Scarlett O'Hara 05-01-2011 08:34 AM

Instrumental music is fantastic. How can you not appreciate it? My best friend hates songs without vocals but some of the best music is instrumental alone.

Insane Guest 05-01-2011 11:17 PM

I would actually favor instrumental music. As with what jackhammer said, I kind of like thinking of the music came to be and how it drifts from one mood to another to give it emotion with no need of a vocalist. It's also fun thinking of how the song got it's title. I've been getting into a lot of Ambient and Post Rock, and I find myself getting more into it than artists with a vocalist. Sometimes music was meant to be heard without the disturbance of vocals.

333 05-02-2011 12:23 AM

I agree, Misfit. I've always preferred instrumental music. There's always room for interpretation when vocals are present, but sometimes the imagination can be impeded with lyrics. I said lyrics because I enjoy songs that use vocals as another instrument without lyrics. And like many others mentioned here, for the most part, music started out as instrumentals.

I can definitely understand being easily bored with instrumentals (depending on what you're listening to), but what about how distracting the vocals can be? Ever listen to a song that originally has vocals and then listen to the instrumental version to find that you've missed something?

Bottom line, sometimes much more can be conveyed without words.
