Bob Dylan and his delivery
Bob is without a doubt a great song writer, performer and stage presence..........but he has had an odd genesis............not many people have had greater success with people covering your songs than you have had doing them yourself.
I just wondered are there any Dylan songs where his original eclipses the covers? If so , what are they ? |
Wait, so you're asking if there are dylan songs that are better than dylan covers?
Well... All of them. There are a few covers that are almost just as good, but that's really it. |
I tend to agree with s_k above
but just for argument's sakes, I'd say his version of "Percy's Song" trumps Fairport Convention's cover, and many people disagree with me on that can't post the youchoob of it simply cos it's not available you can find it on Biograph  |
s_k, I fixed the video you posted.
Of course Dylan's original songs are better than the covers. Like s_k has said, there are a few that come close to being better, but that's all. |
The Stripes' cover of One More Cup of Coffee and Hendrix' cover of All Along the Watchtower are the only covers that are better than the originals as I know. I can imagine there being more potential for superior covers of his recent songs though, seeing as how awful his voice is these days. I must say that the Byrd's cover of Mr. Tambourine Man is one of the worst covers in the world, I can never figure how it got so popular.
|
All Along the Watchtower is one of the only covers I'd ever consider better than the original, for any artist.

He sounded like a muppet on the grammys. Almost like hes been gargling with hand grenades.
|
If the question were to be asked the other way around, you'd have better discussion. For example, Dylan's greats are often covered, but not better. His terrible songs however were picked up, dusted off, and made great by The Greatful Dead. He's said so himself.

I also like this slackers cover of "I Shall be Released" Dylan did some pretty great covers himself, though! He made an album called "Dylan" in 1973. Consists of covers. There's also a later album called "Dylan". Don't mix them up. |

Bob Dylan is definitely an artist, where I don't feel his delivery does his material justice. Brilliant lyrics, kinda so-so melodies, and the arrangements and his singing are just so bland and boring. So there is a lot of potential for covers improving on his songs, but I can't really think of some. I don't really care.
|
I will have to admit, Bob Dylan's music really touches me on a spiritual level, the mans lyrics are simply superb, and they all have a strong feeling or meaning.

great tunes those.with dylan, there's just so many to choose from!!

His only album that's even remotely consistent enough to be considered a personal classic is Blonde on Blonde, but I understand why so many of his albums are revered the way they are. He's an artist who can introduce new ideas into music while still excelling at those ideas, so that he can't be thrown away and forgotten in a decade.
edit: this isn't even what the OP was asking about... I'm/we're a little off-topic. I've heard a few good covers of his works, namely "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go", but none eclipse the originals in my opinion. |

these two do eclipse the originals:-
but the Woodstock sessions were ramshackle at best anyway |
There's no covers of the really interesting Dylan songs if you ask me.
Like... Simple twist of fate, Blind Willie McTell, Lily, Rosemarey and the Jack of Hearts, Visions of Johanna. Lately some dutch guy translated a lot of Dylan Lyrics and they were sung by some other Dutch dude. It sucks. I have a Dylan comicbook though in which various comic artists draw comics to the lyrics. It's very nice, very stylish :) |

In terms of covers there are a few good ones out there I particularly like this one |
