does the sleaziness of certain rockstars bother you?

i want my rockstars to get laid and do drugs but not underage girls. don henley got busted in 1980 for having a naked 13 year old girl overdose in his house. how he beat jail i'll never know. jimmy page was notorious for sleeping with underage girls. and pete townshend, one of my heroes, recently got busted for kiddie porn. does this stuff bother anybody else? none of these guys did a day in jail. am i being too prudish? **** bothers me

Janszoon 06-28-2011 04:32 AM

Yes, that stuff bothers me, but I generally try to separate the art from the artist in my mind.

Majority of the time when you have money, you can pay off the right people and get away with nasty illegal crap like that.

To answer your question, yes it's quite disturbing and it bothers me to.

It's really hard to separate artist from personal life when they do things that extreme

Yes, it`s worrying when much-admired rockstars do something indefensible. One of the earliest culprits was Jerry Lee Lewis, who, back in 1956, married his own cousin`s 13 year-old daughter. Among other things, his action poses the moral dilemma : if you want to have sex with a minor, does marriage make it less, or actually more, offensive ?

Not everyone escapes jail, though. Gary Glitter and Jonathan King both spent time behind bars, as did Mexico`s own Gloria Trevi, whose surreal story can be read about, at length, here:-

Slick Transit Gloria - New York Times

Howard the Duck 06-28-2011 08:54 AM

it could be worse

at least they're not killing or raping babies

Lisnaholic 06-28-2011 09:25 AM

That`s true ! Plenty worse outrages taking place in the world. For crimes against children, some of the saddest take place in Africa:-
murder, amputation, rape, and the kidnapping of children to train as soldiers/guerrillas.

Back on the topic of celebrity sleaze, these are pretty high on my list too:-
- commiting suicide when you have young children.
- death by overdose, which, unless it`s completely accidental, rather speaks of uncontrolled greed.

And let`s not forget Ken Dodd, who cheated on his tax returns !

Howard the Duck 06-28-2011 09:26 AM

i was going to say Africa but was afraid it might be taken as a racist comment

Pretty much this... Although, I'm not always successful.

That whole situation involving Townshend is a bit sketchy. It was never completely proven he had possession of child pornography. He was apparently doing research or something for his "campaign" against kittie porn...

As for Page... I've never really liked him all that much anyways (Led Zeppelin is good, though).

I try to do this, by trying to know nothing of the personal lives of the musicians I listen to.

Lisnaholic 06-28-2011 09:37 AM

I don`t think anyone would think that, Il Duce. No-one can deny that it`s a continent with an uncountable number of tragedies, but no-one is trying to make a racist point here, are they ?

I don`t know how true this is,Jack Pat ,but I read it in the UK magazine Private Eye:
Apparently Towesend`s solo career was flagging so much that he thought he would dabble in pornography to generate a scandal that would put his name back in the headlines. There`s supposed to be a song on Quadrophenia that outlines the whole idea.

captaincaptain 06-28-2011 09:42 AM

It doesn't get any sleazier than Gary Glitter.

I thought I remembered reading that Pete Townshend was actually doing research for some kind of effort stop kiddie porn, which is why the charges against him were dropped.

Lisnaholic 06-28-2011 10:01 AM

Yeah, that could be. It ties in with what Jack Pat said. Either way, if the charges were dropped, we shouldn`t really be flinging mud or throwing stones or whatever the metaphor is.

This is correct. It was research for his own biography hes gonna pen. He was sexually abused as a child.

I tend to not think about that, I don't really stay connected to that kind of world with those headlines. It's ****ed up for sure, but all I focus on is the art.

Of course, though fanboys will find that hard. Though they probably just deny the allegations anyway in most cases.

that's cos Glitter and King obviously couldn't even afford Townshend's autographed pick, let alone "buy" witnesses, prosecution officers or judges

i never heard that about johnathan king before. he's the guy who discovered genesis. maybe he was secretly sexually attracted to them. they were all 15 or 16 at the time he discovered them

OccultHawk 06-28-2011 11:25 PM

I'm much more offended by their carbon footprints, especially Bono's.

They gave him a tape, it wasn't like he discovered them playing at a gig something along that line. They knew he knew something about the music business and thought he could help them out.

It does when they are more about sleaze and less about the music.
