Straight-Edge

Straight Edge is something a lot of indie and emo kids participate in, and im sure it spans the genres. However, there seems to be some disagreement between it.

First off, I'd just like to say that people should be straight edge only if they believe in it, not just because they want to be hardcore. anyways.

This is how I know straight edge as: No drugs, and no drinking (for the most part.)
This is how some websites I've visited define it: No drugs, no drinking, no sex, and always buy music(no downloading).

Personally, I really think that sex and buying music have almost nothing to do with straight edge, especially moreover with buying music.

you want a debate, i am very, very anti straight-edge. no drinking? no sex? no downloading? why do it to yourself.

What kind of a life is that. Even nuns get out more than that... I bet theyre allowed to download stuff. Besides, half the 'emo kids' that say theyre straight edge wouldnt even know what it meant. It just means more scene points for them.

Straight Edge as it was originally was designed was to promote a non-drug vegan lifestyle. No drinking was not a founding tenant. the guys in Minor Threat drunk. alot. it was no drugs, no medicine (when at all possible), no meat, and no casual sex.

i am edge to an extent. i eat meat. and drink on occasion. i can't really call my self edge anymore no can i? drugs are lame though.

the only ones i have heard are: no drinking, no drugs, no sex. and that i totally agree with cuz im only 15 and i find all of those to be for much more mature people. and i dont wanna screw up my life when im so young.

No drugs.
No drinking.
And yes, you can have sex, but only if you're in a commited relationship.
Straight edge is basically living a poison free life.
Not having sex is a safe way to live, I suppose.
But if you're doing it right, you're not breaking edge.
Some people don't take medication, nor drink caffeine.
If you're on the verge of DEATH, yeah, you can take the meds.
Insane, much?

Anyone who listens to Minor Threat should know Ian Mckay...he decided to go against the grain because of a couple things. A. Many of his friends turned into alcoholics, drug addicts, etc. B. The venues Ian and his friends would go to, soon turned into bars, and under aged people were of course turned away.

The concept of straight edge has made its way into modern culture, and thus adapted more modern concepts such as caffeine, sex, and vegan/vegetarianism. There are no "set rules" for living straight edge, because it's what one makes it out to be for themselves; personal fulfillment and achievement. Jumping on the straight edge bandwagon may be considered a trend, but wtf, why not support something that is designed to better one's self? I think this way of thinking and living is amazing, and I'm glad to see people are part of it.

As for myself, I guess you could call me straight edge. I don't smoke, drink, do drugs, and I'm vegan.... However, I'm not one to throw up X's on my hands or have straight edge tattoos. I know people who are hardcore and devoted to the lifestyle of straight edge, and I support that, it's cool with me.... I’m just not as outspoken about being straight edge, but if you ask me, I'll be willing to tell you that I don't smoke or drink...etc.

I think Jonahs the onl one whos really given a good explanation. Straight Edge is a movement that evolved out of the 80's hardcore scene(particualary DC) as an alternate lifestyle that questioned much of what was going on in the scene. Straight edge 3 main ideals were 1.No drug 2. No Alcohol 3. No promisuis sex. Anti-violence was DEFINETLY not a part of the original movement as many sXe kids were militantly so(paritcularly Uniform Choice amongst others). All of this stuff like no downloading music, must be vegan, no medacine, no this no that are all just stuff people have decided to try and implement in for themselves. As far as emo kids being edge its most likely because its trendy and cool. I think most people are opposed to the sxe movement because its got a really bad reputation as a bunch of jocks. I myself dont like to subscribe to any label let alone all the crap baggage that comes with straight edge but I have made a concious decision not to drink or do drugs al long time ago. There not that cool or important. But I also dont think less of anyone for taking part in activiteis I see as silly.
