Your reaction when confronted with popular music
 

Since my debut on this forum, I have picked up a ****load of recommendations here, and discovered a lot of artists whom I hadn't the faintest clue of.
The average knowledge of users on this site is overwhelming, and that is beneficial for somebody like me, who wants to listen to as much good music as I can.

However, I notice that many of you guys have prejudices towards popular music and mainstream artists, which is understandable.
But, I want to know, how do you interact with this type of music when faced with it.

Say you're at a club, and you're a massive Jay Reatard fan, so you've been listening to him all day and crowing about him to anybody that would listen.
How do you react when you're in a club, and the new joint from Katy Perry comes on.

Do you dance and have a ****ing quality time, regardless of the music, or do you take the sulk and go sit in a corner mumbling under your breath because you disagree with the music choice.

Or your mate starts bumping the new Backstreet Boys album in the car, subconsciously, you want to fist pump, but instead you give him a lecture about Elvis Costello's Armed Forces album, and how it is superior in every way.

How do you guys treat and react to popular music, when confronted with it.

I don't go to clubs. I go to strip joints. Some strip joints play porno music. Porno music just happens to some of my favorite music.

I listen to everything anyways. If I want to have fun and the music is in the way that's what earplugs are for.

Generally I'm very critical of it when it's presented to me on radio or television. I usually find it irritating and either criticize it to myself, or my companion. At best, I block a lot of it out. Typically pop artists may have one or two singles I don't find that offensive, but the rest of their work is a let down. I'm not sure if I would be less biased if the same vapid music was presented to me under the guise of independent music or not.

He was talking about being confronted in clubs, strip joints etc. Basically would you be able to block out the music?

I only go to places where they play proper music.
Supermarkets are hell for me because they keep playing annoying R&B.
The average age in an average supermarket overhere is 45 or something like that.
WHY do they keep playing music for youngsters?

I think you may have just skimmed both our posts. I definitely responded to his post, and expounded a bit on my own thinking.

I don't listen to bad music, I just treat it as background noise.

As for being in a club, I've learned that there are times when being a music snob isn't all that.

Being in a hot sweaty club with some cute girl grinding her ass into your crotch is one of those times.

I somehow don't have the ability to exclude sounds. It's really handy sometimes, but it does suck most of the time. I always hear the music playing. Even if I don't want to :(

I don't block out music particularly well either, SK. I just grow increasingly irritated.

It gets to the point where I don't get some stuff I need because it's right under a speaker. In my current supermarket it's quite allright. But in my previous one the music was too loud and there was a speaker right above the vegetables. Not healthy.

In clothing stores, music is often played VERY loud.
So I just buy bandshirts, buy my shoes at the music store and let my mum buy me jeans. It's that bad.
