The White Album by The Beatles is by far my favourite. Do you have a favourite song from that one?

Mellon Collie was actually triple as well, it's just that it was released at a time when the vinyl format wasn't popular and most people remember it as a double CD

how could i have forgotten that?

Hell I forgot the Who both Tommy and Quadrophenia.

@ il Duce, you`re right about Mellon Collie.

I'm not usually a proponent of double albums. I like to listen to albums in their entirety, and my attention usually begins to wane by the end of the second disc. Normally, I would rather the band just release two separate albums spaced apart and cut out the filler that normally goes along with doubles.

Actually, on the same point, I think single albums that push the 80-minute mark are usually too long as well. I think the ideal run time for an album is 50-60 minutes. With that being said, there are few double albums that I love...

Dylan- Blonde on Blonde (I believe it was the 1st rock double, but it now fits one 1 CD)
Rolling Stones- Exile (however, it also now fits on one CD)
Yes- Tales
GNR- Illusions (going out on a limb on this one, but both those albums are great)
Floyd- The Wall
Genesis- The Lamb

With all that being said, there are loads of live albums that I think warrant being doubles or triples, but I think that's different than studio recordings.

I know most people love both those The Who albums, but I could never really get into either one, no matter how hard I tried. The concept of "Tommy" just seems so absurd.

I will admit that there are parts of the Quad that I really like, though :)

at the expense of a 10-minute harmonica solo being cut out of Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands - not that I like that song much but c'mon keep the integrity of the album

there's a 3 disc reissue with Pete's stripped down demos of it - you might like that more if you think the Great Quad is bombastic and overblown

I have both the original LP version of Blonde on Blonde and the single CD release. I had no idea there was a part cut out of "Sad Eyed". The track time on the CD is 11:19. How long is the song on the LP; it takes up the entire forth side of the release, but I've never timed it.

No Tago Mago? For shame, Il Duce. For shame...

Garrett 11-24-2011 09:54 AM

While I was checking out the Bob Dylan thread I realized I left off a double album off of my list....definitely one of my favorites!

Bob Dylan and The Band / Before The Flood `74

sopsych 11-24-2011 10:38 AM

GNR - Use Your Illusion I & II (just debated on That Metal Show, as to which is better).

I can't think of another I particularly like. I really only like music from the last few decades, and as we know, since then double albums of original material have been rare.

Sneer 11-24-2011 12:44 PM

Can - Tago Mago
Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You
PIL - Metal Box
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists...
Husker Du - Zen Arcade
George Harrison - All Things Must Pass
Soft Machine - Third
The Beatles - White Album
Amon Duul II - Yeti
Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind
Swans - Children of God
Klaus Schulze - Cyborg
XTC - English Settlement
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Volume II
Tangerine Dream - Zeit
Future Sound of London - Lifeforms
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew

There are more, but these spring to mind.

Chives 11-24-2011 01:11 PM

The Beatles - The Beatles
Mothers of Invention - Freak Out!
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
The Clash - London Calling
Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of War of the Worlds
The Who - Tommy

Special shout outs for Blonde on Blonde and...Marvin Gaye's Here My Dear? Not sure if I know them well enough to be favorites, though.

While on the topic of double albums, you know what's my biggest pet peeve EVER? Automatic sequencing on vinyl records. You know, where Side 1 and Side 4 are put together and Sides 2 and 3 are on the second record? So you can't just flip the record over and keep going? Yeah. I have nightmares about that.

Goofle 11-24-2011 01:17 PM

I don't know which albums are supposed to be "Double" albums as pretty much every one mentioned is now available in a single CD.

Rate every album mentioned that I have listened to though.
