Ever listened to an album just because its name sounded cool?

I'm sure everyone has done it before... Currently I'm very interested in listening to Machine Gun Etiquette by The Damned even though I've never listened to any of their music previously and I'm not a huge lover of punk.

mr dave 12-15-2011 02:12 AM

Oh how times have changed...

I've BOUGHT albums based on cool name alone (well... that and album art), mainly because I had no other option to find out what the material sounded like. Albums like...

Meantime by Helmet
Superunknown by Soundgarden (though this one was only because my house didn't yet have cable tv in 1994)
Dopes to Infinity by Monster Magnet
La Sexorcisto Devil Music Volume 1 by White Zombie

Now as for having checked out (read: downloaded) albums in the mp3-age solely based on name, you might as well be asking how many people undo their pants before using the toilet. :p:

RVCA 12-15-2011 02:22 AM

Not so much for names, but if an album has cool cover art, I'll definitely check it out.

Howard the Duck 12-15-2011 02:58 AM

i never did

i thought those Super Furry Animals' album names sounded cool but never bought one

Guybrush 12-15-2011 03:31 AM

A little while ago I checked out H. P. Lovecraft ..

The band, I mean, and their eponymous debut.

duotone 12-15-2011 05:42 AM

Good album covers attract me but on Spotify I typed in Motown and discovered a band called Mando Diao as they have a track called "Motown Blood"

Album names, not so much. Band names though, most definitely. It's the primary reason I got into Melt-Banana. Same goes for The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower. And really, any band with some sort of ridiculously long/silly name that I can confirm beforehand is not some sort of screamoxmetalxcore piece of trash.

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-15-2011 06:21 AM

I usually find there's fun to be had in finding the dumbest reasons I can think of to listen to something.

Same here. That's why I bought my first My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult album. 20 years later I'm still a huge fan of them. :)

Kip1985 12-15-2011 10:15 AM

I only checked out 2 bands based on their names: Job For A Cowboy and Rainbow Butt Monkeys. I'm sure people know who JFAC is (especially people who listen to death metal), but not too many people know who the RBM are. Only after listening to them and reading up on them did I find out that they later changed their name to Finger Eleven.

To be honest, I usually only find myself picking up albums with interesting names.

Artwork is the more important factor, or "windows appeal" as Mary Portas might put it, in terms of attracting the buyer's attention, and something I am mildly fascinated by.

However, this isn't necessarily what attracts people: AC/DC's "Back In Black" is the second best selling album of all time, and it doesn't sound that fascinating, and the cover is just a black background.

James 12-15-2011 12:39 PM

How I got into The Flaming Lips.
"Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots? Sounds cool!"

Mrd00d 12-15-2011 01:47 PM

I was browsing a downtempo electronic site and came across

Ooze - Where the Fields Never End

One of my favorite albums in a long time.

Psy-Fi 12-15-2011 02:03 PM

My introduction to Captain Beefheart was through Trout Mask Replica, Just because I thought it was a cool sounding title. (And I thought the cover art was quite cool, also.)

Howard the Duck 12-15-2011 07:23 PM

the only album whose name had a factor in me deciding to get it was Repulsion's Horrified (apart from hip hop bunny bop's rec)

cos i like to be repulsed and i like to be horrified

Hey now, As Far As I Can Spit was a pretty decent track back in the day. It's too bad they chose to lame out as hard as they did though, then again they were basically Canada's slightly heavier answer to 311 so it's what you get. And yet another disc I paid money for sight unseen.

Your experience would deter anyone from picking artists/albums based on cool names. Two ****ing horrible bands there.

However, the following artists I only listened to because I liked the name and as it turned out I liked the music;

-Super Furry Animals
-The world is a beautiful place and I am no longer afraid to die
-The Twilight Sad
-We Were Promised Jetpacks

Also, David Bowie's album Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars was the first time I properly listened to his material, just because the album had a cool name.

And also this.

Raust 12-17-2011 08:54 AM

The only album that raised an eye brow that had such a blatant title I had to listen to it would have to go to Big Blacks Songs About ****ing. I had know idea what kind of music it would be at the time never hearing of the band and when I heard it for the first time it was totally what I wasn't expecting, but I still liked it.

TheNiceGuy 12-17-2011 05:08 PM

I'd probably add Exile on Main Street as well for me.

Key 12-17-2011 09:24 PM

It's happened quite a few times, and I generally always end up liking the album a lot:

Blackguard: Profugis Mortis
T.Rex - Futuristic Dragon
Mygrain - Orbit Dance

To name a few.

CanwllCorfe 12-18-2011 12:05 AM

Absolutely. But it's mainly the album art that gets me.

tigerbeathappening 12-18-2011 03:11 PM

I have never been a fan of U2, but I gave Achtung Baby some attention, because there was something I liked about that name.

simonbrew 12-19-2011 05:55 AM

ive been willing to listen to bands if i liked their name just to see what they sounded like.

Insane Guest 12-19-2011 09:05 AM

A lot of times, like stated above, even at times just band names that sound interesting. Years of Rice and Salt, Screamadelica, Plains of the Purple Buffalo, much like an album cover being awesome pretty much leads me to getting it.

Ah. I hope I didn't fall victim to that with "The Unforgettable Fire," but it's possible. The name is very cool, and when I bought that album, I only knew one or two of its songs well. It's one of my favorite U2 albums, now, so it worked out for me.

Ben Butler 12-22-2011 10:42 AM

A 'cool' album name would appeal but the content is of far more importance to me personally.

Paedantic Basterd 12-23-2011 10:19 AM

Grouper's Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill has an amazing title, and that's my primary motivator to listen to it.
