Bands Your Peers Were Into That You Got Into Much, Much Later
When I was in 6th/7th grade, White Zombie/Rob Zombie were really big amongst my classmates. I never listened to them, had no real interest, and really kinda blew them off as crap without any basis (partially due to *some* of the types of people that were listening to them as well). I guess I was a music snob on various levels even back then.
Then about 3 or 4 years ago, I finally decided to really check them out based on other factors (Rob Zombie's movies, hearing their songs elsewhere, best friend was HUGE into Rob Zombie, etc.). Turns out I really really liked them and now own about 3 Rob solo albums and have seen him twice in concert. Any similar stories? |
Deftones, though at the time I didn't like much of what they were doing. Since White Pony however I think they've done amazing amazing work.
When they came out everyone I knew had that Around the Fur hoodie. (Edit: or was it adrenaline, whatever) |
I guess Nirvana for me. I've only really bothered listening to them this year, but they do deserve their reputation. All my peers used to worship them though, so perhaps they don't deserve that much praise but I can kind of see where my friends were coming from.
|
Guns n Roses. I always liked them, but considering I was in junior high when they got big, you'd think I would have been more into them. I didn't actually buy any of their albums until college for some reason though.
|
Pixies - some hipster chick in my college loved them, i only liked them about 15 years later
Roxette - i hated them when they were popular, got into them only after sitting in front of MTV Europe for hours a day during my University days |
Most of my classmates were into Slipknot, My Chemical Romance and various post-hardcore bands. I gave them a shot but they still ain't my scene. So nope, I don't have much in common with my old classmates musically.
|
My chemical romance is really the only one I can think of, I really hated them when they were popular but now I think their album The Black Parade is actually a pretty good album.

but it's funny, i was listening to them for the first time ever AS he was burning a tape, and i said to him.. "are you sure this is good?" he just said "trust me, it is" i also remember a guy who one time played me "Strawberry Fields" he said it was the greatest song ever, he kept going On-an-On about it, How the Beatles are the best band and Whtvr, but me? i didn't get it.. not until like, 6 yrs laters or something.. |

I think Pink Floyd is one of the other bands people like to listen to because their dads liked them, but not at first because when we're younger we often like to listen to different bands from our parents out of a desire to be different. Then when you're older, you will inevitably encounter these old bands somewhere else and are more likely to listen to them for the sake of music. |
Never grown up in a musical household, and none of my friends seem to want to look for music that is more underground than The Pixies. So I have ended up being friends with people who like decent music, just not much of it.
|
And very decent, if I may say so. Our musical compatibility on LastFM is "Very High"!
|
What's your last.fm? I think I have you added.
|
I only found out about it a couple of weeks ago, so resultantly it's pretty empty....
MightySalami I pinched Urban's old avatar since I loved it so much! |
|
Yeh, just noticed! Pinched his avatar too.
I have LOW musical compatibility with him. Still awesome guy though. |
Tool
everybody....well pretty much everybody raved and raved about how progressive and amazing they were....i listened to a couple tracks and went "neh!"....then they opened for Primus on a new years eve.....i literally went to the highest seat in the Oakland Colosseum to well....ironically get high....seconds after the band started their set i was sold....amazing live.....still not a huge fan of their recorded albums.....i do listen to them from time to time.....but i've yet to miss a chance to see them live since |
What tracks?
|
The Smiths.
|
Peers? not so much. I grew around kids who honest to crap though Bon Jovi was real, tough guy, rock and roll music, until about 1992.
Though based on being the one weird kid in high school who was listening to the Red Hot Chili Peppers before Blood Sugar Sex Magik came out, most people find it odd that I never got into Jane's Addiction until almost a decade later (when Kettle Whistle came out in '97). Hell, looking back, I find it odd haha. Also didn't get into Nirvana until I got In Utero (on cassette) in the mail as the selection of the month for Columbia House. |
Other than Rage Against the Machine, nothing really. Most of my old classmates are into rap/hip-hop, which I just can't get into.
|
I used to absolutely hate Animal Collective and I had a couple close friends who were really into them. I sat down and listened to Sung Tongs like a couple months ago though, and now it's easily one of my top 10 albums of all time.
|
Suppose I could say Frank Zappa. Albeit I wouldn't say my 'peers' were his fans but rather the world. Early Zappa I was exposed to was just his later 70s, and 80s gimmicky stuff. Stuff like "Don't you Eat that Yellow Snow", and "Vallley Girl". Didn't really discover what he was about until years and years later.
|
i suppose i could say The Residents also
and it wasn't a "peer", just an electronic friend who was ranting and raving about them only one day 5 years later after his recs did "The Commercial Album" suddenly clicked with me and i've been digging them ever since "Meet the Residents" is awesome as well |
I despised, hated, loathed King Crimson the first time I heard them. My friend let me borrow In the Court and I despised the whole album. But, I had a 30gb iPod with only 6 gigs of music, so I put it on there for the hell of it. I heard '21st Century Schizoid Man' on shuffle one day, and I kinda liked it. After like 20 listens, I convinced myself to listen to the rest of the album, and I absolutely loved it. I would probably have to say King Crimson is probably my favorite band of all time and one of a few I feel in debt to for expanding my musical horizons.
