Your Musical Resolutions For 2012.
This is something I've done for fun the last couple of years, which is set myself frivolous goals in my music listening to meet in the coming year. Last year I set myself five goals. Only failed one from last year.
Resolutions for 2011
Resolutions for 2012:
I'll add to this as I think of ways I'd like to push myself. It's always amusing to go back and see what you managed to do in the previous year. |
I will finish the remaining reviews for the "25 Albums You Should Hear Before the Moon Crashes into the Earth and We All Die" countdown.
|
1 - Reach Level 60 on last.fm
2 - Reach 3500/4000 artists on last.fm without whoring the radio function 3 - Keep up to date with new music 4 - Start writing a blog of some sort that I keep updated 5 - Get into more Metal/Electronic music 6 - Do more reviews on RYM |
I hereby resolve to start a music journal, and be less "inane", now Pedestrian has explained to me what it means.
|
Rebuild my music collection, I will make my goal to have 1000 albums by next year.
Keep collecting more vinyl. Update my journal more regularly. |
Use my new vinyl player
Buy more vinyl Acquire wumbo-sized speakers |
1. Listen to 366 albums I've never listened to before. Open for suggestions.
2. Attend 5 concerts. 3. Get a record player that won't break on me. 4. Learn to play the sitar. 5. Hit 35,000 plays on last.fm (just reset my play count) I will fail one of these resolutions. |
1. Obtain more music (my goal is to have 200+ albums in my collection by the end of the year).
2. Listen to more recent releases (I've only heard 4 albums from this year. What the hell is wrong with me?) 3. Listen to more hip-hop and electronic. 4. Start a music journal. 5. Attend a concert (missed my chances to attend a few last year). 6. Expand my physical music collection. 7. Discover 50+ artists that I haven't heard of before. |
1.) Listen to at least 50 new albums from the year 2012.
2.) Play at least five open mics. 3.) Compose or commission soundtrack music for my film. 4.) Acquire a plethora of stringed instruments...or, at least one of the following: Ukulele, Mandolin, Banjo, Violin/Fiddle, Dulcimer, Bass, or new electric guitar. 5.) Finish my Phish reviews, and 100 albums reviews. Phish are on their way to being finished, and I've got the list for the 100 albums. Just a matter of finding time to write them. 6.) See 3 or more concerts. 7.) Go to the Harvest Festival. 8.) Put ego aside and finally take a few guitar lessons. 9.) Become more well-versed in music theory. 10.) Discover at least 25 bands I've never heard of. 11.) Buy a lot more vinyl. 12.) External hard drive for music collection. 13.) Write a song that makes someone cry. 14.) Purchase a better microphone for recording. 15.) Release a polished EP. 16.) Get a new pair of headphones. |
1.Go to a concert
2. Delete all the albums on my comp that I don't like 3. Get my colection up to 300 albums after that 4. Finish writing my album 5. Record said album 6. Play some shows 7. Hopefully start a band 8. Write a song over 7 minutes long 9. Get some good headphones 10. Get into genres I haven't had much success with(jazz, noise, etc.) 11. Pay more attention to new releases than I did this year |
1. Release a record that I'm proud of.
2. Play at least one gig per month. 3. Practice bass at least an hour every day. 4. Work on my vocal range. |
Now that I have a large collection of things I don't listen to often or haven't listened to yet, I have one resolution
Don't get my hands on anymore music until I get at least 100 plays on each artist on Last.fm |
Nice idea Pedestrian
I'm going for 250,000 plays on my Last.fm 3,000 unique artists Start a RYM account and start writing |
Watch yourself... Freebase Dali gon' have words.
Edit - This was a message to spammers, not the handsome Mrd00d. |
1. Continue expanding my guitar/singing skills
2. Learn to read and understand music other than tab 3. Pay for most of my digital music 4. Give new artists and old albums a listen 5. Write a journal 6. Get to know you guys and gals |
Mine only consists of three:
1.) Actually attend a concert. 2.) Continue to do what I do as far as listening habits are concerned. 3.) Practice the violin more often (something I seldom do nowadays). |
1. Continue to improve my playing
2. Hopefully join a band 3. Find a Metal band or album that I like 4. Delete any crap still in my discography 5. Continue and develop my music blog Oh and... 6. Spread more Justin Bieber hate! ;) |
i didn't make any last year
i suppose i only have two 1. Relisten to my backlog of about 50 albums the physical copies which I recently acquired 2. Familiarise myself totally with the 1,000 odd albums I downloaded |
Last.fm related resolutions are no good for me. I don't have to actively try to pass any of them. Let's see...
-Actually keep up with new releases in at least three (3) different genres. -Make decent headway in the progress of my bands concept album. -Find a band other than HIM to actively hate. -Go to at least five (5) concerts I would not normally go to. -Figure out why I can't make it through a whole Radiohead album to save my life. -Start a music journal on here, which I guess leads to; -Get at least a hundred posts on here. |
Consistently update my journal. I think I've been very vague about my tastes on here.
I'll try to finish putting my collection in RYM. I don't have a huge collection of music (maybe only 25 GB or so on my computer, and a crapload of vinyl that I can't listen to - broken turntable), but it still takes a helluva lot of time to input them into RYM. That's it so far. |
also a third one:-
try not to be so "inane" here i mean, i dunno, it seems like people want a dissertation from me about my music tastes, whereas i find that if i get over-analytical about music, it seems to detract from my enjoyment of it |
- Go to a least one festival
- Expand my vinyl collection - Finish my 50 Indie/Alternative Albums You Should Listen To thread - Finish my Pixies review thread - Post in my journal more - Post here whenever I can. I probably won't be around here as much this year. - Discover a new band to be obsessed with - Listen to tons of new releases - Discover lots of mind-blowing music |
I don't really see the point in listening to x number of new artists or listening to x number of genres.
I'm just going to carry on listening to whatever I want whenever I want. |

(well, it is in my case, as I need to catch up to you...) |
I'll limit mine to 5
|
Fill my 4gb ipod with music and exchange it out every month for new music
|
Probably to listen to more African and Arab music
And to continue keeping out of mutual ass-licking on Musicbanter. |

|
i vow to listen to more classical and country
|
1. Rip and move my collection to the PC completely.
2. Listen to more music and scrobble on Last.FM. 3. Rate more RYM. 4. Spend on some really expensive speakers and DAC. |
I see surpassing 1000 artists on last.fm to be a realistic resolution for myself.
|
To be a better person and a family man.
|
1) Go to one of the festivals this summer.
2) Buy a cheap bass guitar. 3) Learn how to read music (I'll probably fail tbf) 4) Buy a record player. 5) Invest in some records. 6) I'd love to learn how to play my mates banjo. 7) Rebuild my music collection once my laptop is repaired (3rd time in 2yrs :@) 8) I can't think of an 8, but I will. |

2.Washburn make some good quality, inexpensive bass guitars. (I own one and don't regret buying it.) 3.I didn't think I could learn to read music either, but I found it easier to learn than a foreign language. (If that helps your confidence.) :) 4.It's worth investing some time, money and effort in getting a good quality turntable. (You'll never regret it.) 5.Some of the best places to get quality vinyl at great prices, are at record shows/fairs. 6.Just pick it up and go for it! (You might surprise yourself.) Can't give any suggestions for 7 & 8. (Sorry.) Hope you have a great 2012! |
So, anyway, my musical resolution for 2012 is to get out and see more shows when a band/artist I like comes to my neck of the woods.
I've missed too many of my favorites in the past, who've either broken up or died after I missed the chance to see them the first time around. |

Yes, i have learned that if an artist you like comes near you, you should go ASAP. If you do not go now, it will probably not be the same if you go next time (if) they come around. |
