Default the real reason megaupload was shut down

Digital Music News - MegaUpload Is Now Launching a Music Service Called MegaBox...

"We have a solution called the Megakey that will allow artists to earn income from users who download music for free," Dotcom outlined. "Yes that's right, we will pay artists even for free downloads. The Megakey business model has been tested with over a million users and it works."

Not saying this is wrong by any means, I'm sure this had a lot to do with the record company money, I mean government shutting down MegaUpload, but can artists really do all of this under their record contracts with the record companies? How does that work?

Why isn't companies of the future like MegaUpload paying the corrupt politicians to work in their favor? Isn't that partly why without SOPA/PIPA that the government is seizing companies like Megapload?

Apologies for my ignorance here. If I'm completely off base on this, feel free to let me know.

Megaupload was shut down because the owners were openly involved with sharing illegal content with other Mega staff members and had several illegal operations going on with third party deals.

They ran dishonest business and it was only a matter of time before they were going to get the FBI Hammer!

You see, there are plenty of digital lockers out there. There are plenty of ways to use a site like megaupload legally- like as a backup for important files

True, but that doesn't change the fact that Megaupload was shut down because its owners ran it as a business based on facilitating the theft of copyrighted material. Read this:

Can someone explain why the MegaUpload takedown was horrible? : AskReddit

Yeah I know of a few piracy rings that used megaupload, but it is interesting that they were going to release a legal way to get free music in the form of MegaKey, and I can see why record company big wigs wouldn't want that. Plus, you know, I used megaupload a fair bit for my own so I'm a bit butthurt

megaupload sure had a lot of interesting content, music-wise - like full box sets

While I cannot comment on the owners of Megaupload and their possible implication in illegal file sharing knowingly, I must add that their website did provide a good environment for users to share their files with others, or use as a secondary backup storage. When it comes to file sharing it is extremely difficult to implement a program to stop all pirates. Now, the real question arises on whether they actually tried to stop the piracy adequately.
