But you are only supposed to pick one song aren't you? Obviously that is pretty much impossible for people who have heard much music anyway but that was the premise of the thread. Anyway if I did pick something I would be very uncool to people here and probably not pick something rock or alternative, it would be either classical or something more 'pop'. But then why should I care what others think, I'm not looking to boost my credentials with certain people here.

As I like the craft of ballads, in particular for their compositional breadth and expressivity, I would probably pick something from the 70s, though the 2000s would also have some things in contention (but more non-English stuff). Anyway for whatever it matters I'll pick this one which I like for the 70s craft and purity of melody, where music can be expressive but also constrained within it's art giving it more power.
