We're not talking about today's music. This thread is specifically calling for 80's music.

what a cop out

Read the title, i'm dropping this:

"The most 80's music videos of all time, and why they're awesome."

jayshreddz 03-25-2012 11:41 PM

that has nothing to do with what we were discussing as a matter of why cheesiness is a quality people seem to like.

Just read my comments in this thread and you'll understand why you're completely missing the point.

jayshreddz 03-25-2012 11:45 PM

the point is pointless at this point. i was simply asking what your gauge of cheesiness was and why you liked it. apparently your gauge is simple 'is it 80s? ok i like it".

you must learn to embrace the cheese

power metal is cheesy as Camembert, but i love it

it's not even hipster mentality, it sounds good even if it's cheesy

as for cheesy movies, sometimes unintentionally funny movies can be funnier than intentional ones

Alright, let's just put it behind us then, no reason to continue on. Instead, i'll recommend you some good stuff you'd probably like.

And just for the theme of the thread, here's Rick Astley's new single he released last year:

And just for the hell of it, give this a listen:

what ever happened to loving music because you love the way it sounds? why do you have to love something because it sounds so embarrassing that its a character?
it's like those people who love really bad and cheesy movies because they're really really bad. it's hipster mentality. they will think something new is bad but they won't like it because it's not "cool" to like it.
i think the same thing is going on here.

I love 80's music and I love most of these 80's videos as well, I grew up in the 80's and this was the video age and when MTV really kicked off. There was nothing cheesy about a lot of these videos at the time, as artists were exploring a new media form to advertise their sound and image and show just how artistic they can be. Its only over the last decade or so, that people look back in hindsight and say how cheesy these videos are. In the next 20 years or so, there is a chance that people will be looking back and saying how cheesy today's videos are as well.

The actual point of this thread, is that some people are nostalgic with their music and this is a chance to revisit their musical past.

B-movies are great, because as said they are unintentionally funny to watch and enjoy.

Euronomus 03-26-2012 05:38 AM

More of an honorable mention than anything, no doubt a lot of the previous vids are cheesier and more 80's, but these are the ones I think of for 80's vids

random household objects exploding/breaking, smoke everywhere, and of course poodle hair in the extreme. Also the little head movement the bassist makes @2:06, good for a laugh every time.

More smoke and poodle hair.

No poodle hair for the drummer though.

No need, it's Chris Slade (Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Uriah Heep, AC/DC). That's his style, and a cool one in my opinion.

A double dose of videos with an MTV bumper! You can't get any more 80's than that (The days when MTV actually played music...damn, I miss those days). Do you have what it takes to go through both? In "Voyeur," there's the classic Dirty Part of the City cliche which connects to my love of 80's Exploitation flicks. "Draw of the Cards" was the follow-up to Bettie Davis Eyes" that tried hard to be hip with the times.

Here's one for those who actually followed British and Scottish Pop bands in The Late 80's (This one was from Scotland, with one ex-member of Altered Images). When things tried to get Funky with singers that want to look like they really are down with the streets when in reality they're possibly right from a jeans ad. There was a small audience for this band. Well, they tried, and you have to admit that even with the cheese level on high, there was some good playing in a Pop way.

One minute: The instrument miming. A major mark of The 80's along with the continuous Synth "Horn" hits through the song.

Covers of cheesy '80s tunes are cool too. :thumb:

How about "Mad World" by Tears for Fears.

My reasons.

1. The combination of fingerless gloves with long black coats and poofy hair.
2. The lyrics combined with the music kind of give a nice, mad spin to the entire song..but then it is called Mad World.
3. The bizarre dancing done outside. 99 percent of people who attempted to do that dance probably just looked odd..or mad.
4. Since a cover was made of this song that gave an allto depressing spin on it..and that one is much more remembered than the original.

and Dancing with Tears in my eyes by Ultravox. Since fear of nuclear war was a big topic back then and this is a great response to it.

Oh Toto! Was so great to see a music video of theirs, love their music but never really bothered to check out their clips. Fantastic and so epic :p

Personally, Kate Bush is a must :D

it was a trademark for 80s music videos to be directed by famous "name" directors, John Landis, Russell Mulcahy, Julien Temple etc

this one is easily the best of the bunch (dir. by Tobe Hooper):-

Billy defeats an entire army of zombies with rock n roll (and a power generator surge)

Toto are one of the best bands in the history of rock, their sound so unique. I first ever saw that "Hydra" vid as a kid on a Halloween music video show hosted by Elvira Mistress of the Night. The show featured videos by Joy Division, Clash, Devo, Alice Cooper, Doors and Toto amongst others, but it was the Toto video that stuck most in my mind.

Agree, Kate Bush is always a must and one of the greatest female artists ever.

I'd knew you'd like Billy Idol, I have a soft spot for his music as well and really think Rebel Yell and Whiplash Smile great albums.

You are the one missing the point. He is saying that their is not just one cheese that can be applied to music. Pink Floyds albums in the 80s were giving a bit of cheese, just like Tom Pettys. The result....awesome amazing music that they will never make again. A second type of cheese uses the cheese to sell copies and get a mass audience appeal.

Also Jay I have ran into your posts in a few other threads and you seem to debate a topic by putting down the other person and essentially making fun of them like you did earlier in this thread with milano. Try being an adult and getting your point across in a more intelligent fashion so you dont have to resort to the previous tactic.

i prefer this one actually:-

it's a better song, the video is simpler, more idiotic and goofy and cements her reputation as a "madwoman"

Queen Of The World 03-29-2012 04:15 AM

That was crazy. But I loved it.
