Forgotten Quality Hits by Major Artists

I've had this idea in mind for months, of good-sounding hit songs (at least Top 40) by big artists that for some reason (probably overshadowing by other hits from the same album) have rarely been played since.

One example - "There's the Girl," by Heart, which was mentioned in another thread.

Please remind me of others :)

TheBig3 03-27-2012 04:43 AM

this is pretty vague, do you have a direction you want to go in? So a song needed to be in the Top 10 but it was later overshadowed?

Key 03-27-2012 04:53 AM

I'm also confused with this thread. If they're considered to be quality songs, wouldn't they NOT be forgotten?

bazooka 03-27-2012 06:39 AM

I always thought Get Off Of My Cloud by the Rolling Stones was overshadowed by the previously released Satisfaction.

i was gonna type that as soon as i read the title of this thread - one of my fave Stones' singles

in case you don't know its glory:-

"Get Off My Cloud" seems to be one, as I've never heard of it, but that song is way before my time.

Another dusty gem is "Save Me," by Fleetwood Mac. Maybe forgotten because it wasn't considered the "real" band lineup.

Also, there's "I'm Not the One," by The Cars. An old song remixed and released as the second single from a greatest hits album, apparently without a music video. Enough said.

I don't know if this qualifies, but Squeeze's "Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)" peaked at #44 in the UK (and didn't chart at all in the US) following earlier, higher-charting singles.

That and "Another Nail in My Heart" were two great singles from a band at the peak of their powers. Argy Bargy is the definitive Squeeze album but East Side Story the most creative.

I agree on all counts, Soldier. And now, since you've mentioned it, I have the super-catchy "Another Nail" stuck in my head. ;)

i always thought that that was a bigger hit

cos an indie/retro channel i used to listen to always had it in their playlist

I was under the same impression - very surprised it didn't chart higher. I think it's a pop masterpiece. Perhaps it was a bit too clever for the masses.

sopsych 03-28-2012 09:46 AM

I thought that too - but it's a different scenario from my vision of this thread.

Another good song/forgotten hit - "No Son of Mine," Genesis. Came out right before the pop music scene radically changed, and it's long and disturbing.

Lilja 03-28-2012 10:13 PM

"Rame" by Snap! was a very good song from this group that was big in its time. Even though "Rhythm is a Dancer" was a pretty good song, I think that "Rame" is actually a better song. Plus it is sung in Sanskrit, somthing you just don't hear everyday. Unfortunatly, that pretty much doomed the song as well. But alltogether, a creative song.

Euronomus 03-29-2012 03:43 AM

i know i just posted this in the other thread but:

say what you want about Paul Rodgers but Pages guitar work on this song(and a good portion of the album) is awesome. For a band with two of the biggest classic rock stars out there it's weird that hardly anyone remembers The Firm now.

Here's my choice, the B-side to Under the Bridge, and what should have been included on Blood Sugar Sex Magik as opposed to the cringe inducing 'I Could Have Lied' (yuck). According to Wikipedia it was also a B-side for Give It Away but it wasn't on my cd single (3 remixes and a cover of Search and Destroy).

I still think it's their best single, and while it's hugely popular with fans I haven't heard it on the radio since forever.

Howard the Duck 03-29-2012 08:07 AM

third single, the title track from his "An Innocent Man" album - charted well, highest No. 10, but largely forgotten these days, in comparison to "Uptown Girl", "Tell Her About It" and "The Longest Time"

still quality, though:-

sopsych 03-29-2012 09:33 AM

Yes, "An Innocent Man" is relatively obscure. Probably in part because it's long and has no music video. That happens to be my favorite single from the album.

It was a Conehead soundtrack song, wasn't it?

Miami 2017 I think is one of his most underrated.

slatesphanboi 03-31-2012 07:44 AM

No one ever talks about this song!

Lots of Metal-heads (including Motley Crue) will praise Janet Jackson 'Black Cat' song, but like no one ever praises this song that I think rocks and is probably my favorite Jacko tune.

Howard the Duck 03-31-2012 07:57 AM

everybody hates "It's Hard" and stuff but this one is really underrated:-

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-31-2012 11:28 AM

I've noticed that most people outside the UK think of Dexys Midnight Runners as a one hit wonder band because of that Come On Eileen crap.
Which is a shame because this song got to No. 1 in the UK charts the year before and shows them in a much better light.

And from the same era The Human League released this song just after Don't You Want Me Baby got to No1 in the charts. This song got to No 46, despite that I've always liked this one more.

One last one, Adam & The Ants re-released one of their old songs right in the middle of his fame in the UK, it totally bombed in the charts. I actually thought at the time it was better than his newer material, found someone to copy his first album for me (Thanks Kevin wherever you are 30 years later) and thus got into post punk at the age of 7 :)

"Being Boiled" was recorded much earlier than "Don't You Want Me" when the guys from Heaven 17 were in them

it was rereleased after DYWM to try to hang on the coattails of its success

Yup. That was the other spot where it was released. Same deal as the Wayne's World soundtrack featuring another b-side from the same album (Sikamikaniko). Looking back it seems a little odd that two SNL movies that came out around the same time featured 2 different b-sides from the same group but none of their hit singles.

Pet Shop Boys - Always on my mind - YouTube

Weird, lengthy music video that I've never seen on TV. I've rarely heard the song on the radio. Clearly it was overshadowed by other hits from the album.
