idea for music website - who is interested??

Hello everybody

I've been craving a website that serves one simple function: to tell me when new music is coming out.

I don't follow music news that much, but I have a lot of musicians and bands I listen to (as I'm sure you do) and have to periodically check wikipedia to see if they have anything new out, which can be frustrating when I find an album's been out for over a year (for example).

I've looked around and can't find anything that fits the bill. I'm thinking just a simple wiki that has the details of the next album, single or EP of any artist, with an option to subscribe to updates by RSS/email if desired. Citations from wikipedia could be used.

Please tell me if I'm being dumb and this already exists?? Or something similar?

Or do you think it's a good idea and would use the site? cos I know exactly how I'd implement it (I'm a web designer/developer), I just don't want to put a load of effort into something that nobody cares about. I do have ideas like that sometimes...

Thanks for reading this far - any feedback would be MUCH appreciated.

Benedict

Its a great idea but I think Metacritic has a list of albums being released each week. It is not complete since it does not include minor websites. This is an idea that can definitely be expanded upon. How do you plan to implement the site?

Rate Your Music already has a function like this, as does last.fm to some degree. Although it's not narrowed down to just albums, it includes EPs, singles and other stuff as well, but I find it useful to keep track of new releases from artists in my library.

The concept doesn't sound all that useful to be honest, but then I still don't get the appeal of Twitter so I'm probably not the best judge of these things.

I was thinking a site like Billboard.com would have all that info.

Nice av btw Jans.

iTunes has notifications too on artist releases although if they're not already in the store it's not going to help.

Why not just sign up for your favourite bands' newsletters and get emails when something is happening?

I like the idea, there is no true feature like this on any music site, however Billboard usually says what big albums are coming out at least like 3, 4 months in advance.

I love the idea. I would definitively use it, and to prove it I will address some of the alternatives other people have put out.

Billboard.com - There is no way that Billboard will have most of the artists that people who listen to real music care about.

Itunes - I have never gotten a notification from Itunes about newly released albums. Also, there are artists that not even Itunes that has. Also, I do not trust Itunes.

Subscribe to the newsletter - That is incredibly bad in a bunch of ways. Not all artists have newsletters. It would take FOREVER to subscribe to everyone. E-mail is a very old concept, I want something more stream-lined and convenient. Also, I haven't checked my e-mail in years.
