love new sounds/miss old lyrical content?
 

i miss musicians with a good lyrical message, i'm tired of songs about the opposite sex and about money, but i want to hear something with a new music making strategy other than bass drums guitar vocals, any suggestions??

Sadly in my view, there has always have been garbage music before but now it has increased. Great songs now have become fewer and fewer. That is very sad.

I believe you are talking about mainstream and radio friendly artists. If you want better lyrical content then you need to look a lot deeper. There are plenty of incredible recommendations in this forum, best you take advantage of it.

Seconded about Cave. Also Tom Waits, Matt Johnson (The The), Fish/Marillion and indeed many prog rock bands. In fact, if it's deep lyrical content you're looking for with a real slant away from boy/girl/boy songs, you really should look into progressive rock. Check the subforum. For instruments other than the usual, Waits is a good start as is Eno, Glass and others.

As Vanilla says, look around: there are many threads devoted to eclectic artistes here, and you should get a lot of ideas. Probably stay out of the pop section. Try also the journals: Janszoon's "25 albums you must hear before the moon crashes into the earth and we all die", Bob's "Guide to noise rock", "Geekoid's world of music" and "Urban's journal of stuff" are all good places to start. Oh, and seek out a guy called Jackhammer: you want eclectic, different, challenging? He's your man!

thanks guys, I love these sites! I'm a huge rock fan, i love all the greats, prog rock too, i even love colosseum, but i also love rare good pop.
I will check out jackhammer & Dalek they're the only two i haven't heard of so thanks so much!
So you guys know i found something pretty amazing from someone else's post on another site so i'll return the favor by passing it on to you guys cos it's new - 'Blind Mr Rosemary' by kookoo house is f*&@ing incredible, it's definitely also worth checking out.

Yeah, Jackhammer's your man. Many members here are open to genres I haven't even heard of, but Jackhammer is probably the only one who has sampled them all. Maybe. As well as Janszoon. And Urban. And Bob. And, well, just ask around, ok? ;)

But check out those journals: you'll be amazed. Watch out for falling meteors if you go into Janszoon's one, though! :laughing:

I don`t particularly mean to deflect this thread, but when I read your title I thought you might be lamenting the absence of talents like this guy:-



Most of his songs have very cleverly constructed lyrics, but unfortunately they now sound irretrievably dated. Are there any modern artists attempting to bridge the gap between that era and today ?
