I feel like with each passing year these kinds of lists get harder and harder for me to make. After a couple decades, even my favorites among favorites start to seem a little worn and I realize I haven’t listened to them in ages. Here are ten that have withstood a decade or more for me, in sort of a half-assed order:
David Garza—”Discoball World” Simple, beautiful, bittersweet and also gorgeously produced. Spoiler for .:
Ministry—”Breathe” This was probably my favorite song was I was 14 and I still think it’s pretty fantastic. Such an amazing rhythm here and the production still sounds fantastic. Spoiler for .:
Professor Longhair—”Tipitina” There’s just some about the dancing melody and lurching low end of the keyboard that has grabbed me from the first time I heard this. Spoiler for .:
Scratch Acid—”Monsters” Few songs capture absolute craziness the way this one does. Spoiler for .:
My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult—”A Daisy Chain 4 Satan” I have so many favorites by these guys that it was a little hard to choose, but I’ve been loving the campy, druggy evil of this track for about 21 years and it still sounds fresh and vibrant every time I listen. Spoiler for .:
Swans—”Killing for Company” This song gives has got to be one of the most dread-filled pieces of music ever created. Seriously, I get a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach every time I listen to it. Amazingly powerful stuff. Spoiler for .:
The Church—”Under the Milkyway” Even though these guys have been one of my favorite bands for nearly 20 years, their most popular song is still probably the one I’d rate the highest. It’s just that damn good. Spoiler for .:
Killing Joke—”Mathematics of Chaos” The ultimate album closer. Music to get **** done to. This track kicks in the door and pound you until it unravels gorgeously. Spoiler for .:
Tears for Fears—”Sowing the Seeds of Love” Laugh all you want, but I think this is one of the best pop songs ever written. It has so much to it that it’s like a mini-symphony but every second is incredibly catchy and perfectly executed. Spoiler for .:
Los Fabulosos Cadillacs—”El Matador” Complex, beautiful, powerful and it makes you want to dance. The only thing better than this song is this song live. This may very well be #1 for me. Spoiler for .:

FOO FIGHTERS- Everlong
One of the better written rock songs in my eyes. They don't get much love on this site, But this is one song that really touches home with me. I love the lyrics and the rythym of this song and Grohl's vocals are almost haunting sounding. Concrete Blonde- Tomorrow Wendy My love of Napolitano will never cease. I think shes one of the better songwriters of the 90's and these lyrics are very engrossing. And also this album doesnt miss a beat. The Alarm- Strength Mike Peters could wail as good as anybody in the 80s and they had this great ability to connect with me on a deep level. I saw this band three years ago and he sounded better then ever. CCR- Lodi This is one of those songs my dad used to play incessantly and I think it will stick with me til the day i die. I love the grassroots approach and the stunning vocal ability of these guys. My dad had the chronicle tape stuck in his player on a desert trip once and he asked me if I wanted to listen to something else and I said why would we do that. Beastie Boys- Looking down the barrel of a gun My favorite of all hip hop records and my favorite song off said album. I like the screeching guitar with the pinch harmonics and the delivery of the vocals is so in your face. RIP MCA. Billy Bragg- Brickbat I love his songwriting and I like his almost working class voice. Kind of an acquired taste but this song is beautifully written. |

Jans i was having a "oh yeah i fucking love Ministry" day last Saturday....and after several beers and several listens to....what i would call their golden years ie "Land of Rape and Honey - Psalm 69" and my friend and i came to the conclusion that the songs Land Of Rape And Honey and Breathe are by far two of the greatest songs ever written actually your whole list rocks....and i'm with you man....the second i hear "I Live For Drugs" everything stops and the volume goes to 11 :) props to Yorke for Maps....i don't think it would make my list....but man do i love that song |
My top songs are with Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Beatles, The Doors, Deep Purple etc. but that'd be boring for others to read. So here's an alternative list (or some songs I like, in no particular order)
