I was trying to think of a Neil young song for my list. Comes a time is a good candidate. |

They were just a hell of a band. I love the piano intro in his version of like a rolling stone with The Band.
Another song I'd put in my top 10 would probably be knockin on heavens door. It's kind of questionable, though. But when I think back to when I hadn't heard the song a million times, it definitely has to be on there. It was like magic the first several times I heard. So simple, the chord progression is as basic as it can get, but it's so moving. The lyrics, the feeling he puts into it, just the atmosphere of the song. He's far from being a great singer on a technical level, but I don't measure vocal ability like that. To me, it's all about the soul and the feeling and the sincerity a singer puts into his performance, and in my opinion, there aren't many who do that as well as Dylan. Such conviction in his words and voice. |

the stripped version of it is obviously good too as it doesn't stray too far from the other version, but it's missing that little piano riff that i love! hahaha it's a perfect song though isn't it? i can't even point out exactly what's so great about it but it just is. :P |

I agree with you about missing that rolling piano riff on the official "Watching the Wheels". Now that you've mentioned it, I realize it's that riff which renders something special instrumentally -- it rolls circularly, like the "wheels" John is watching. What I prefer about the other version is the clarity of John's vocals, the fact that they are not double-tracked. One YouTube commenter stated the song would have been even better musically had McCartney and Starr played on it, and I agree. Paul's melodic bass stylings and Ringo's very musical drumming would have suited this track perfectly. |

The pat garret album just has this epic feel about the whole thing. The instrumental version of "knockin on heavens door"with the flute is so awesome. Two of those albums you mentioned, "new morning" and "planet waves" are two of my favorite albums. I agree with what you say about his voice through that time period. He definitely moved away from that signature "speaking" vocal style he used on albums like 'highway 61' and 'blonde on blonde'. He started showin that he could really sing on 'nashville skyline'. And then there's 'desire', which featured great vocal performances, especially In the song 'one more cup of coffee'. |
Hmnz, lets see what I come up with, as there's many a tune out there close to my heart.
I'd explain why I picked each of these, but I'd need a thread's worth of description to do any of 'em justice. :/ 1. Gino Vannelli - Brother To Brother 2. Hawkwind - Images 3. Pat Metheny Group - To The End Of The World 4. Queensryche - Eyes Of A Stranger 5. Comus - The Herald 6. Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage 7. Pet Shop Boys - Being Boring 8. Devin Townsend - Funeral 9. Frank Zappa - I'm The Slime 10. Wang Chung - To Live And Die In L.A. |
This is, of course, unbelievably difficult, but hey, I'll give it a go.
1. Summertime (Doesn't really matter which version: I love this song) 2. When will I see you again --- The Three Degrees 3. Valentine --- Ten 4. I'd love you to want me --- Lobo 5. Everybody hurts --- REM 6. Angel --- Sarah McLachlan 7. Reminiscing --- The Little River Band 8. The last resort --- Eagles 9. No bravery --- James Blunt 10. Gethsemenae (I only want to say) --- Ted Neeley, from the soundtrack to the movie "Jesus Christ Superstar". |
I should say something for each song but I took a lot of time adding and subtracting from the list that I kinda ran out of steam.
Warm Love was recorded during a live during a performance on Musikladen in 1974 - and you know what Homer says about 1974. I don't know if this version of Warm Love counts since it's not an album cut, but I'm a recorded live performance enthuiast. And that is what I tried to do with this list is to include my favorite artist and genres. For instances, I like songs in languages other than English, so I include this version of SOS is from Agnetha's Elva kvinnor i ett hus album. I agree with Trollheart: Quote:

I always thought the lyrical work in 'across the universe' is some of the best from any Beatles song.

Nice work, Neapolitan. Although a huge Genesis fan, I purposely left out any of their, or any prog band's material, as I reasoned this should be the ten songs that resonate down through my life, that I couldn't live without, that say something about me or move me in a way other songs don't, and that, should I have to choose only ten songs to have on a ipod on a desert island (with unlimited charge, of course!) I would have on that player. Though I love prog, and AOR (and metal) I could find only the one song (the one from Ten) that fit that description.
Even so, it was hard, and I know that there are many, many songs that didn't make the cut that could/should have, but that was in the end what I narrowed it down to. Nice to see one of Agnetha's songs on your list: are her other albums good? I have only heard "I stand alone"... |
This is just what I've thrown together, if I took the time to listen to each and every song in my library and pondered for hours on which ones I liked better than others, this will likely look entirely different. And I did write a paragraph on why I chose each but my laptop crapped up so I'll let the music speak for itself. :)

The only two must have on the list are Back Street Girl and The Fountain Of Salmacis. I think the music is just amazing. I have Agnetha's box set of her Swedish studio albums, it is mostly her singing Schlager with a couple of an exceptions like SOS. She's back by Sven-Olof Walldoff orchestra, which is like a regular string orchestra with bass guitar and drums, not too different from the pit orchestra used for an Andrew Lloyd Weber musical, but the music is more like 60/70-ish Pop. You know she was Mary Magdeline in the Swedish verion of Jesus Chirst Superstar? I don't know if they have that released but her songs are on youtube - it's some of her finest work. If you like Agnetha and Lobo you might like Françoise Hardy |

Hard question, here's my shot at my top 10:
1) Iron Maiden - Dance of Death 2) Thunder - Love Walked In 3) Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms 4) Meat-Loaf - Two out of Three 5) Metallica - The Unforgiven 6) Prince - Purple Rain 7) REO Speedwagon - Keep on Loving You 8) Iron Maiden - Fear of The Dark 9) Kiss - Psycho Circus 10) Magnum - Spirit I just sat there for at least 15-20 mins tying to work out an order, as you can see I love Iron Maiden the most. That's my Dad's fault, I was grown up around rock type groups and because I'm only 16 people find it strange I like older and unique groups ;) |
This is pretty difficult. I'll give it a go though..
1. Placebo - Come Home 2. Sonic Youth - Wish Fulfilment 3. Pixies - Ana 4. The Lemonheads - Hannah & Gabi 5. Hole - Asking For It 6. Dinosaur Jr - Start Choppin' 7. Elliott Smith - Twilight 8. Slowdive - When The Sun Hits 9. Nine Inch Nails - Something I Can Never Have 10. The Distillers - Dismantle Me I think? This probably changes so often though. |

Why, when I was your age, my parents weren't nearly as hip as we are now. You only wish you were this 'with it' and 'groovy'! Maybe what we need here is a kids table like they have at Thanksgiving, where you can park the young ones and they can jabber on about their Justin Beiber what-have-you or whatever other crap music they're listening to on their EYE-pods, so the ADULTS don't have to listen to them!!! Dang Whippersnappers! |
