easy access to music

hi guys
i have some problem, which might sounds funny, but in fact it's quite serious, and maybe many of you, people, got it also. it's about easy access to music. everyone knows how much music is created these days - every random guy can record whole album at home. also, download/buy/hear music is also very easy, i don't have to explain it. this situation generates problem i want to talk about.

when i started listening to music i could listen to one band/album over and over for even months, and i really listen and know that songs. it was because i didn't know about many bands. now, when i have bigger knowledge i want to listen to everything, to be an expert. so let's say: now i listen to louis armstrong, next thing in winamp's queue is flying lotus and after that some wu-tang clan staff. that's a serious situation :) so because i can have so much music in easy way, i want to have more, more and more, and i don't have time to stop and really know some albums/bands. and i don't find it good. so i listen to everything, which means i listen to nothing.

you have that kind of problem too? how you deal with that?

enjoy discussion :)

I don't find it a problem. If you can't find a favourite artist, then find a favourite genre. Mine is rock.

Find a vampire, let him turn you, then you live forever and can listen to all the music you ever wanted to. Problem solved. And all you pay is your immortal soul. Seems like a good deal to me.

Seriously, what do you expect people to answer? Listen to what you want to, when you want to. Decide maybe this week to listen to, say, metal, next week (or month) to ska, next to prog. Maybe. Or make each day a specific genre day. Or here's another idea: turn off shuffle! Bloody hell, it's hardly a problem to have too much music to listen to, and not enough time. Just make some. I seriously don't know what you think people are going to reply with?

Why are you so concerned with becoming an expert rather than just liking what you like? That indirect insecurity in personal taste seems to be one of the most common and defining elements of modern music fans. Everyone seems to be hung up on becoming an expert so their voice carries the most weight and their opinion becomes the de facto perspective in their environment so that their ego never has to face not the challenge of being incorrect, but the reality of being average (OH NO! :yikes:)

You say you want to deal with it, but it's your self you need to deal with.

I agree with this. i've been listening to a lot of obscure Funk & Northern Soul over the past year. I don't pretend to know a thing about either of these genres i'm just enjoying hearing anything I discover.

Being an expert means nothing to me.
