never liked music? help plz?

i want to start off by saying that im serious and have yet to find an answer besides the spiels i start off with. and it would be huge if i could get a legitimate answer. thank you :)

I have heard the "you havnt heard the right music yet... or youll like music one day just wait." spiel hundreds of times ever since i was a little kid. i got an ipod for my birthday when i was 10 and havent touched it after the first day i got it. friends will show me songs and i dont care for the song, but i like watching the music videos. when ever people turn on music it annoys me and stresses my brain to the point that i want to claw my face off. my parents got mad and yelled at me for expressing my stress for music and they continue to play it loud or quiet. i have never had an emotional interest in music for as long as i can remember and have no desire to listen to it or buy it. im fine with music in games or movies because its part of the thing but outside of that i just find that it aggravates me, no matter the genre of music. if music dissapeared off the face of the earth it would take me a wile to realize it was gone. IF ANYONE COULD FIND A MEDICAL EXPLANATION FOR THIS IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED, i have searched for a while but could never find an answer. im tired of people telling me the spiels that i stated, and people looking at me like im crazy for not caring about music at all. BTW IM NOT DEAF

You could have a form of amusia (tone deafness).

Or asperger's. I'm serious.

What kind of music have you tried?
In general, what kind of things elicit a positive emotional response from you?
In general, what kind of things elicit a negative emotional response from you?
Would you consider yourself normal in most aspects?
Do you have any particular hangups that you can't get past? If so, what are they?
Have you had any traumatic experiences growing up?
Can you whistle a tune to mimic the original, and have it confirmed to be generally correct by a third party?
Etc...

Obviously, we'd need to know more information than you've provided. Even then, the best we could offer is an assumption based on whatever evidence you provide.

j4ckofspades, I think Burning Down's idea may be the right answer. You may have congenital amusia.

Congenital amusia is due to a person's brain structure and it causes music to sound unpleasant and abrasive (like the sound of banging pots or irritating noise). If what people call "music" sounds like banging or irritating noise to you, then my guess is this is simply due to how your brain developed while you were a fetus (Amusia: How Is Music Perceived By Someone With Amusia? ). However, my thought is that seeing a doctor is important to rule out any other potential causes, just to be on the safe side.

I recommend you take this online listening test to see if you may have congenital amusia:

Delosis - Musical Listening Test

You might wish to e-mail amusia researchers at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne by using their e-mail address that is provided by the online test website:

listeningtest@ucl.ac.uk

You may also like watching the following video in which Oliver Sacks, a neurologist, describes a woman with amusia. This woman was relieved to find out that there are other people like her, and having amusia doesn't mean there is anything wrong with a person's personality or emotions.

Oliver Sacks - Musicophilia - Amusia - YouTube

Freebase Dali asks good questions. The ones I'd really be interested in learning the answer to are these:

(1) Can you whistle or sing a song (like Happy Birthday) in tune, based on other people's perceptions of your singing?

(2) How well can you distinguish between two different songs? Or does most music sound the same to you (greatly irritating)?

If you *do* have congenital amusia, I hope it helps you and people near you to understand that amusia is a little like color blindness in that you may never be able to appreciate music the way the majority of people do, just like someone who is color blind (and there are many such people) will never see colors in the same way the majority of people do, but this is something out of your control, and life offers many other enjoyments.

Finally, I'm sorry your parents have gotten mad and shouted at you. They should not be doing this. I hope as they learn more about your situation, they will become more understanding and supportive.

[EDIT: I just took the listening test, which was fun and required under 10 minutes. MusicBanter people, I bet you'd really like taking this test, too! It would be interesting to compare our results. I confess, I had expected to get a perfect score, but I didn't (although I was close!)...which I blame on feeling d r o w s y due to having eaten too many cookies (sugar overload!).]

I doubt the question is an example of "trolling." If you had checked, you would see that the original poster also posted the same question on Yahoo. I answered there as well.

I recommend you treat people who come to MusicBanter asking for help as legitimate instead of assuming the worst. A music website where people should be knowledgeable and helpful about music is the perfect and reasonable place to go when one has a music-related question.

If the original poster does have amusia, then this isn't a trivial matter. Here's a great article about amusia and how stressful and frustrating it is to deal with it in a society where music is such a pervasive part of the culture and emotional communication:
