It was originally made by an Italian DJ for the clubs, it picked up a lot of attention and was eventually put out by a record company who hired a French Model to 'front' the band and went on to top the charts in every country it was released in .... except for the U.S.

See, this is an odd one in this context. Americans generally give the OK to produced music videos, expecting that the performance aspect doesn't really come into play unless it's a "live" video or actual performance.
I can't presume to know the wider opinion of this sort of thing in the '80s, as I was a bit oppressed back then, but I can't imagine that it would have been too much different.
The only thing I could posit is that Americans saw it as some sort of "fakery", whilst unwittingly making mockeries of our own positions on produced performances that directly represented the very thing we were considering in distaste.

"Yea, I don't mind if the person in the video is not actually singing the song... BUT **** ME IF IT'S A DIFFERENT CHICK NOT ACTUALLY SINGING THE SONG!"

That's what I get out of that.

VINCE NEIL KILLED SOMEONE?????

Here's another controversy that turned into an Urban Legend and took on a life of its own. Did you guys ever hear that Vince Neil killed someone? I have heard this fact presented several different ways. That he had a feud with another rocker and murdered him in front of witnesses and was never prosecuted in any way. That he got drunk, pulled out a pistol and shot someone, again in front of witnesses, and never went to jail for it. It was one of those rumors that just went in any old direction.

Well here's some info I've found on this controversy. It was a drunk driving accident and someone DID lose their life. Why Vince Neil wasn't put in jail for a very long time? I dunno.......

Notes from this article taken from 2011-----

Motley Crue singer Vince Neil was sentence to 15 days of jail time and another 15 days of house arrest for a DUI arrest back in June of 2010. Neil doesn’t turn himself in to the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas until February 15, but has told People.com that he already has learned his lesson. “I made a mistake, and I have to finally learn my lesson and go do a little bit of time. I’ve already learned my lesson,” the 49 year old singer told People.com.

Not to beat a dead (member of Hanoi Rocks) horse, but wouldn’t you think that he should have learned his lesson back in 1984 when his drunk driving cost Nicholas “Razzle” Dingley’s life? We’re not saying that Neil doesn’t feel remorse, but this still isn’t the first time that his issues with alcohol abuse have popped up in the media. After his month long sentence, we truly hope that Neil attempts to seek out help for his addiction and finally is able to overcome them. We at Metal Insider can only guess what goes on in Vince Neil’s mind, but upon killing someone as a result of drunk driving, we’re pretty sure we would never do it again.

I'm almost immediately diverted to what's her name (movie star) that gets arrested all of the time recently.
If you know who I'm talking about, then that part of this discussion is pretty much sorted.

JIMI HENDRIX MURDERED?????

It is believed that.....

"Someone stuffed pills and poured red wine into Jimi’s mouth, which resulted in him vomiting and aspirating the wine and drowning. This type of aspiration asphyxia is not uncommon in alcohol and drug abuse. Both alcohol and sedatives can cause nausea and vomiting and, when the individual is either very stuporous or in a coma, anything vomited can be inhaled into the lungs and cause death from aspiration. The question here is whether Hendrix fed himself the drugs and wine, which he apparently had a habit of doing, or did someone force them on him.

In Jimi’s case. the official cause of death was listed as “barbiturate intoxication and inhalation of vomit.” John Bannister, the surgeon who attempted to save Hendrix when he arrived at the hospital, says that he remembered there was a large amount of red wine in his lungs and his stomach and that to him there was no doubt that Hendrix had drowned in the red wine. The question raised by James Wright is whether this red wine was vomited up from Hendrix’s stomach or, as he claims Jeffrey told him, it was poured down Jimi’s throat.

The kicker here is that apparently Jimi’s blood-alcohol level was very low, indicating that the alcohol in his stomach had been recently consumed. Alcohol absorbs very rapidly from the stomach and into the bloodstream. Anyone who has taken a drink on an empty stomach can vouch for that. The fact that the blood-alcohol level was low means that the Jimi had not consumed the alcohol over a long period of time but rather within an hour, or likely less, before his death. Otherwise one would expect the blood-alcohol level to be higher.

Alcohol and drugs in the stomach cannot affect the brain whereas those in the bloodstream do. So if Jimi was not severely intoxicated, the question is why did he vomit and aspirate wine? The unknown here is what his blood barbiturate level was. If this was low, then a case for homicide, as Wright claims, could be made. But if it was high, high enough to cause nausea and vomiting, high enough to make Jimi stuporous and subject to aspiration, then he might very well have overdosed on barbiturates. It is possible he could have consumed a massive amount of wine just before he became stuporous and then aspirated this wine into his lungs and drowned."

People who love Hendrix's music who also hate drug use really love to profess a supposed conspiracy, don't they? He had a fantastic cocktail of drugs in his system, and his mixture of amphetamines, alcohol, and sedatives were surely a large factor in his death.

7 Famous Musicians Who Stole Some of Their Biggest Hits | Cracked.com

This was fun, but my favorite "you stole my ****" lawsuit was Tom Petty sueing the Red Hot Chili Peppers over "Last Dance with Mary Jane" sounding too much like "Dani California." You decide...

I remember reading Radiohead got sued for the similarities to The Air that I Breathe and ended up including Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood in the songwriting credits for Creep on the album. Anyways I just like this story because I love music by both bands and had seriously never noticed this for the longest time!
