Ah, the man still has it! What is he now, 65? And still sounds as young as ever! Can't wait for that album. Great single.
|
66 now...apparently he announced the album on his birthday.
I'll be happy to listen to it, but I've been satisfied with Bowie being the enigmatic legend who doesn't have to make more music. His past work was enough to keep up his coolness until he died. I always felt that's like the perfect rock star life...he even had his crazy drugged out days but now he can live it up as someone no one will question...immune to the calls of cashing it in. Not sure if this counts as cashing it in, but it's still unexpected. |
I know it's nitpicky, put I can't get over how bad the album cover is
"Alright guys, we need an album cover" "I got an idea. You know heroes?" "Sure." "Let's take that album cover , go into paint, use the cut tool to cut out a square in the middle of it, and then we'll use the text tool to type the album cover name." "****ing brilliant, Jim." |

http://www.davidbowie.com/sites/davi..._box_600sq.jpg Not much better I know, but still..... As far as the song goes, it would be a good album track, but the fact that they are releasing it as the teaser doesn't give me much hope that the album will be great. |
So apparently I'm wrong, the guy who "Made" the cover has a blog explaining his choice.
david bowie the next day that album cover design/ |
I added it to the Albums of 2013 thread.
|
It's been 10 years so hopefully this is a great album from him

That's got to be a joke surely? EDIT - No, read the link. To be fair I can understand why they did it: Quote:

I pretty much still hate the cover, but I give the designer massive respect for explaining their vision behind it, even if I don't get it or agree with it.
Wonder if anyone would be interested in throwing ideas around for what they think they should have done with the cover, taking into account all that was said in that piece? I personally think this: Several images of Bowie, going through his past, so say from the debut through classics like "Heroes", "Low", "Ziggy", "Alladdin" and so on, up to the more recent stuff with TM and so on, each image larger than the last so that it seems they're in a line going from back to front and getting larger as you watch, a progression if you will, with the final picture a cut-out/shadow with a big question mark over it. Whaddyaz think? |
Dunno, you mean like all the albums in chronological order similar to an iTunes gallery?
This seems to have worked though, as we are discussing the cover and that can only be good for the album's success, imo. |

This had better not disappoint. |
Wow that's a terrible cover.
|
I really like this single, I think the problem is that people expect David Bowie to do stuff like "ziggy ziggy stardust" and everything he does they compare to that
they forget that this album was released in the early 70's, things change in the music industry... his single is much better than the worse stuff on mtv btw, I listened to this song in the morning and it got stuck in my head and then I went to work, I give guitar lessons, and I taught this song |

I don't expect anything like that. I doubt many of his fans do either. I don't even think the Ziggy stuff was his best music. The Thin White Duke + Berlin Trilogy  |

but you know... somehow a lot of people remember this specific album most of all don't you think his song is much better than anything people listen today? |
People will say it's his best since Scary Monsters and then about two years later say it's shit.

Now that I think of it, yeah, like itunes coverflow, but not with albums, with people. Well, one person. So far as we know. |

I get you. Surely that's been done before by somebody else though, whereas this is as far as I know, original, and in my opinion, very good. It looks crap but the thinking behind it is good. |
This song is starting to get stuck in my head. I'm actually anticipating this album

Single out today.

Didn't like first single. Was hooked on the previous album but magic is missing now, though I'm probably one of the biggest Bowie fans around.
|
I am so fecking excited about this album, I'm a huge David Bowie fan.

It's getting some seriously strong reviews, "The greatest comeback album in Rock'n'Roll history"... can't help thinking that's an exaggeration but all the reviews are consistent with each other. |
On iTunes now to stream. It's sounding great so far.

Listened to all of it now. This is definitely the best thing he's done in the last 25 years and deserving of all the praise it's getting. It's brilliant.
|
Have just bought it. Will give it a few listens and let yaz know what I think.
|
Any good TH? What do you think are the best tracks? For me it's Valentine's Day, The Next Day, I'd Rather Be High, the two singles, all of it really.
I'm waiting for the vinyl. |
I'm still digesting an It Bites album for the Prog Rock Album Club, Fluff, while also analysing the new "War of the worlds" for review, checking out David Soul's career for a new section in my journal, putting together a serious Rory Gallagher feature and also reviewing as many albums as I can while at the same time writing synopses of TV shows for the Couch Potato.
So I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. But it's on the list for well before the weekend. Well, before Monday anyway. I'll let you know. |
No probs mate. I think you'll like it.
|
Fluff, first time I listened to it I was underwhelmed, bit meh, but second time I really got into it and I think I can say now I do like it a lot. More info on favourite tracks soon, though "Love is lost" and the closer are coming close to being the best so far...

Hey chaps I really liked this album. I posted this elsewhere but it seems to be relevant here , it's a track by track review and analysis of The Next Day...
David Bowie - The Next Day: All 14 Tracks Reviewed And Analysed My Top 3 Essential Tracks from it are.. - The Next Day - Where Are We Now? - You Feel So Lonely... I think all 3 are up there with Bowie's best!! PEACE x |
That is the shittest album art ever. Not a bad album though.
|
Okay I've had plenty of listens to this now (expect a review soon in my journal) and here's what I class as the best tracks, working down from best to --- I couldn't say worst, cos no track on this is really bad, but the ones I like least.
In order: Love is lost Where are we now You feel so lonely you could die I'd rather be high The stars are out tonight How does the grass grow You will set the world on fire Heat Dancing out in space Valentine's day The next day Boss of me If you can see me Dirty boys |
Looking forward to the review man. Surprised you think Valentine's Day is so low down in the ranking, I thought that was one of the best tracks on there. Lovely song.
A month on from the leak and I can safely say this is definitely his best since Scary Monsters. |
The Next Day
Anyone love Bowie's latest album? I love it, but not as good as Heathen. Your thoughts?
