just asking for some friendly advice
 

This seems like a friendly place to look for some advice. I am in a band with friends, and although upon hearing that line, most people are prone to immediately dismissing a chance of talent or potential, I think about music differently from most people. Perseverance, or lack thereof, is the main reason in my eyes that the figure for unsuccessful band attempts is so high, but other than that it's how people aren't willing to move out of their comfort zone and really try new things. I'd say that is essential really as the world doesn't want to hear the same thing over and over, but in saying that I don't mean to criticise having influences, you just need to use them to help you create something you can really call your own. Anyway, I was hoping for any chance of some helpful advice from nobody in particular on how to go about getting what I think is good music with commercial potential noticed. Thanks for reading.

If you're asking how to be discovered, then anyone who can tell you that is already richer than Bill Gates! :)

Basically, I would think there are the YouTubes and the Soundclouds, but the chances in reality of you hitting it big through those media are pretty low. The old maxim applies: gig gig and gig again. Oh yeah, and gig. Get your music heard as many places and by as many people as possible, and in the end remember it's all a roll of the dice. Some day an A&R man may be in the crowd or the word may go out and he/she will come down to check you out. But there's no easy path, and success is never guaranteed. It's a hard slog, with often very little or no reward at the end.

thanks for the reply! Although resources such as youtube and soundcloud are excellent ways to get out there, there's just so many people doing the same thing. It's a hard time for musicians to get heard these days. A lot of it may be down to, as you say, gigging, but also through that meeting new people relevant to what you're looking for I suppose. I'm thinking taking time to work full time, saving money and using it to fuel my musical endeavours. I'm not easily exasperated by unsuccessful efforts and believe I have the motivation to chip away until I can finally find a good opportunity and way through the impenetrable wall we call the music business! I'll do it one day :)

I would say that sums it up. You have to be heard, and the best way is playing as many shows as possible. You have to start somewhere. Good luck.

i said this is another thread that was along the same lines. i came up with this idea when i was in a crazy band that i totally thought was going somewhere... unfortunately, dudes have d*cks and they can impregnate multiple women in a very short time. that's another story.

anyway... i'm pretty sure this idea will work. and it will cost probably about 5-8 grand.

buy a school bus. reserve the space nearest the front for chilling and sleeping. the back can be your store where you sell merch and ice cream. then, the space in the centre of the bus is the stage. you have to cut along the bottom of the side, up either side of that cut, and then another cut pretty much down the centre of the roof, and make a huge hinge. this is the door, which could be propped up by 4x4s, and when suspended can display a huge poster with your band's name and maybe a youtube link or something, and perhaps your speaker system can hang from there too.

next step, locate huge crowds. pre-concert line-ups, festivals, rallies, university campuses, etc. go to the crowds, set up shop (ideally in no more than 5 or 10 minutes) and play a show that will probably get interrupted by the police. have someone videotape each one of these little stunts and throw it up on youtube and blogs and such. repeat.

fire-dancers would help, too.

the typical core band is dead Drums bass guitar and vocal some advice what u need 2 do is use all of that if u want but your going to have to expand and implment everything else musical equipment skill and studio and guest artist ...:P
