The Grammys

I just do not think that there is that much going on in the world of the kind of music that will be highlighted at the Grammys tonight. It seems that a bunch of dance routines thrown together around some songs is the standard these days.
Yes being older I have lived through the music of the 60s and 70s along with the Disco era which to be honest had better groups then what is out there today in my opinion. Perhaps some other people here would like to offer their opinion about the quality of music that is being presented these days....

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-10-2013 02:21 PM

It's presenting what has made the most money over the past year, not what the best music was.

Jedey 02-10-2013 02:27 PM

I'm looking forward to the tribute to Dave Brubeck with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke & Kenny Garrett.

A interesting yet unfactual comment. Justin Bieber has probably sold the most albums this year and he is not even nominated..........

LoathsomePete 02-10-2013 04:02 PM

That's because even the Grammys have standards, as low as they are.

I agree about the music scene today and the Grammys usually reflects the music of the year in a nutshell good and bad. I always find something interesting and entertaining about the spectacle. This year I want to see the Levon Helm Tribute. And I'd rather see Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars do 'Safe & Sound' than any of the best songs nominated this year.

The biggest disappointment this year is that Bob Dylan's 'Tempest' wasn't nominated for the Best Contemporary Folk/Americana album. IMO it deserved to be nominated for 'Album of the Year' too but that's expecting too much from the Academy. But they do get it right sometimes.

I agree. That rings true of most of Grammy popular music nominations. But for some reason ...I guess its just the law of averages...they do hit on the best in popular music that didn't even have time to sell big being they came out late in the year or albums that didn't even have one big selling single or radio hit like Bob Dylan's 'Time Out Of Mind'. I did feel sorry for Radiohead losing out to him. ...NOT!!! :) And I didn't even know who Arcade Fire was when they won. And was blown away when 'Brother Where Art tho' soundtrack won. Those are the cool unexpected moments I like to see at the Grammys. This year won't have any of those for me.

Paul Smeenus 02-10-2013 04:47 PM

IMHO, Those people that put on this show, quite frankly, don't know the first effing thing about music.

From the list of nominations I've seen he may as well be.

I'm actually pretty bummed that I don't have access to a TV right now. I really want to see Mumford and Sons and fun. play.
Other than that, I don't really care about the Grammy's.

Arya Stark 02-10-2013 08:23 PM

The Grammys did not start off very well. Goodness.
So many people were out of tune with their bands! What was going on?

Gunnels, fun. was super out of tune. Not happy.

Electrophonic Tonic 02-10-2013 08:51 PM

The whole "what is eligible" criteria for the Grammys is just weird. The Record of the year in 2013 was released in 2011.

And if I remember correctly, the Robert Plant/Alison Krauss album that was released in 2007 won for Best Album in 2009...

blastingas10 02-10-2013 10:14 PM

I don't support the Grammys, and I agree it doesn't present the best music, but nonetheless, I thought jack white killed it. Epic performance, such energy.

Surprisingly, i thought Kelly clarkson was good with her Carole king tribute.

Best moment of the night for me would have to be the Levon helm tribute. It was great to see everyone having a good Time while playing the music of The Band and paying their respects to the late great Levon Helm. Who knows how many people out there said, "Levon who?" It would have been nice to see Robbie and Garth come together for it.

FrigginParadox 02-10-2013 11:16 PM

riahnnas forhead is the biggest thign about the grammys this year

I blame the Grammy sound crew then. They were perfect when I saw them back on '10. =\
Still, gonna look it up when it leaks onto youtube.

I agree...best performance of the night. They did a great tribute to Levon at the Americana/Roots Music Awards show too...and the same song. I was hoping they'd do 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down' but I guess 'The Weight' is more suitable for layered ensemble vocals.

The 2nd best thing about the Grammys tonight was Taylor Swifts' legs. :)

3rd Jack White's performance. He definitely kicked ass.

And what the hell was that Forest Gump song? I thought Taylor Swifts song was the silliest song of the night until that one showed up.

Yeah I don't know, there was definitely something wrong.
Miranda lambert and the dude she was with were not perfect.
Elton John was a little off.
Fun. was DEFINITELY not on spot.

I would blame it on the sound crew too, because there's no way that many artists messed up so badly.

Eventually, though, something happened because then a lot of the artists were spot-on.

Except Frank Ocean. No one knows what the hell he was doing.

blastingas10 02-11-2013 12:47 PM

Sound crew definitely had to be off. I thought everything sounded off until the black keys. I don't mean the artists themselves sounded bad, just the sound quality.

Arya Stark 02-11-2013 01:29 PM

Really? I didn't think it sounded that horrible for THAT long, but the Black Keys were definitely great.

James 02-11-2013 05:06 PM

I like how Bruno Mars performed with Sting considering his new song sounds exactly like The Police. When I first heard it I assumed it was actually an obscure Police classic. So I'm glad they're acknowledging that.

TheBig3 02-11-2013 07:20 PM

Elton John was a little off? Lady, the drugs you have are spot on.

That Levon Helm jamout was in-saaaaane.

Yes. A little off.

jetlifer 02-12-2013 12:23 AM

Justin killed it.

Arya Stark 02-12-2013 11:23 AM

^ What I didn't realize was that his performance was really similar to Bruno Mars' performance last year either at the Grammys or the VMAs. That whole old school thing has been done!
He did it well, though, I'm not complaining.

First and last time I saw Bruno Mars was on some other awards show last year. He gained some cred performing with Sting...that's fo sho.

Not sure what he killed but whatever it was it was already half dead. (zzzz)

What bummed me out tho was I got all into my cozy happy mouseketeer mood until that rapper came on stage and ruined it all. :(

Thank God for Jack White for stomping on whatever Justin killed to make sure it was completely dead. :bringit:

JohnConnington 02-18-2013 04:53 AM

I thought the grammys were a pretty dull affair this year to be honest.
