Interesting thread.

One of the most depressing for me is Slide Away by Michael Hutchence, probably because it feels like he is foreshadowing his death/suicide.

XtremeEclectic 03-29-2013 12:37 PM

Depends on what type of depressing you want, O Willow Waly from the movie "the innocents" is a downer on the style and sound, whereas for me the story within Billy Talent-White Sparrows is pretty depressing.

Kind of have to not have a gun near you for this one.

Tim Buckley - Hallucinations

I think this is actually more emotive than anything his son ever did. I also maintain that Rufus Wainwright and Ari Hest had more emotionally devastating versions of "Hallelujah," but I digress.

I never found this song depressing! I always just found it beautiful. It brings back memories for me as well.

Now this is depressing! In an amazingly beautiful way.

I never found this song depressing either! It always made me feel something else, don't even have a word for the feeling though.

Really? There's just something about the bass and vocals specifically that just gives off this incredibly hopeless feeling to me.

It's more a feeling of...bewilderment, fascination, hopelessness even. But not in a bad way for me. Kind of like...a feeling of united human bewilderment with the strangeness of life or something like that, ignoring the lyrics of course that is always how it made me feel.

Scratch that, this is the most depressing song I have ever heard. And the most touching. The lyrics make it pretty clear what it is about I think.

I still see you as a baby, I do
Climbing onto the stage in front of the school
High strung
The cat got your tongue
The spotlight came out
You'd been strung
I followed the trail
when I heard that they found
you in the cowshed
I still see the insect filled jars in rows
The calculations and the diagrams, constellations
High strung
The cat got your tongue
The spotlight came out
You'd been hung
I followed the trail
when I heard that they found
You in the cowshed

I have a few things by Antony, but this tops all of his work by miles in my opinion. The poignancy in the verses is just arrestingly gorgeous.
I think it was you who got me into him in the first place too, with this song in fact!

Great thread topic and lots of cool posts, haven't heard a lot of these before! Most songs that suggest sadness (slow, dirgy, dissonant) usually don't make me feel sad; it's usually a song that conjures up sad memories. For instance, one of my friends that was killed at age 30 in a car accident. At her memorial, they played this song, which ruined the song for me:

I've also attended more than my share of funerals and memorial services--and because I've heard this so many times at the services, it makes me sad, in spite of it being a beautiful song:

Ohhh awesome! :D I love hearing that I've introduced people to new music. It makes me feel all bubbly inside. But enough of that, I'm here in this thread to spread sadness.

I rarely get depressed by good music but bad music is really depressing (example embedded below).

This song is a real favourite of mine. It sounds utterly hopeless and Jenn Ghetto sounds like she's on the verge of cracking up at any moment.

Won't tell a single soul that my soul's gone
It's hard to write this song
It's all a joke
It's all been wrote down by someone who's probably dead
