Love the old time Creole music.

Cab Calloway's best known song, I suppose.

If you don't hear a lot of conversation about the music of this era it would likely mean that you're neither into the Jazz or Classical music that prevailed in that time. The 20's are widely considered the golden age of Jazz. If you'd like to learn more about the music of that time, this would likely be helpful and informative.

Yes, they were able to put songs "on wax" but it was way more primitive technology (in the mid-20s electrical-based recordings get introduced and the sound quality goes way up on those). And it wasn't vinyl, but shellac disks (or were wax cylinders also still in use by the 10s? I have no clue). And like the cool cat above me said, if you're into the right kinds of music there is plenty of talk about this period of music. Personally I haven't heard a ton of recorded music from before the 20s, but it's out there and I'm sure some of it is great.

For me, I love me some classic female blues, so here is some Bessie Smith.

Gershwin's always a winner for this era. The chanting was probably a part of the creole flavor, it's a part of the New Orleans/generally-Louisiana culture which has a lot of haunting and ritual associated with it, as well as the mistiness of the swampland being a possible inspiration for such spooky sounds.
