Advice for at tips playing your first big gig?

My band has our first big gig coming up this friday and I wanted to see what tips MB has for us? There are two bands playing before us and then we will be the headliners. We are a four piece nu-grunge band if that helps at all with the tips.

I'm really looking for some tips for creating our setlist and how to add ambiance to the show rather than just playing song after song.

Don't show your penis.

Far From California 05-19-2013 10:02 AM

So I probably shouldn't go the GG Allin route then?

Ass Napkin Ed 05-19-2013 10:07 AM

It depends, when was your last bm?

Far From California 05-19-2013 10:36 AM

hmm i'd better bring some laxatives to be on the safe side.

 ^ Well ^ it worked for Robert Plant (kinda) and Jim Morrison so ..

I would suggest maybe a Valium or Xanax might help out  playing your first big gig.

Seriously though, just keep it all in "Fun" and have a good time, that's all that really counts in the end after all is said and done.

GOOD LUCK! with your debut! :)

Thanks I need it! haha we're playing at the same venue that two of my favorite bands have played (nirvana and the strokes) so it'll be special

Try not to think about "performing well". When you're all wrapped up in those sorts of details, the important parts get abandoned. Just get into what you're doing as though you were in the band room. It's hard to shut your brain off with all the people watching, but if you cannot successfully do it without alcohol, then I would recommend a drink or two to take that edge off.

Make sure you're comfortable with everything you'll be playing. I know I've gone into some gigs with only partial knowledge of one or two of the tunes, and that can ruin the whole gig, for me anyway. I just obsess over it and it ****s with me.

Try to find a quiet place to meditate just before, or close to the time when you go on stage. This helps to clear your mind of any distractions.

Just before the show, get the whole band together and have a chant of something. Like just before an NFL game when the team gets together. After all a band is a team, and this fosters team playing and comeraderie.

That depends on the tunes. Without hearing them it's hard to really give any advise on that. I've found that jumping into each song with no distractions in between helps with continuity.

Thats all I can think of really. Good luck and break a leg!

I would day that if you are nervous that is a good thing.

Blarobbarg 05-21-2013 05:22 PM

If you're calling yourself a "nu grunge" band, I would worry less about playing "well" and just pound every single song as hard as you can until ears bleed and a moshpit destroys the venue. Be a little bit dangerous. Be animalistic. Scare them, it will make them remember you... which is what you want, obviously.

Best of luck to you.

Play for 10 minutes & incite a riot.

This is some solid advice. Jerk off onstage while looking your audience in the eye and give them something that they will remember you by. Then play your set. Create a reputation for yourselves.

It worked well for Enya. Or was it The Jesus and Mary Chain.

The event people and the cops were the ones that didn't like us, and during a show at this 5k run benefit thing, they tried to shut us down because the crowd was getting a bit too moshy, and our lyrics were apparently "politically anarchic".
When they tried to shut us down, the trumpet player jumped off the stage after yelling something at the cop, ran through the crowd with the cop in chase, and everyone in the crowd were getting to that tipping point.

They cut the power, and our singer just kept on with the lyrics, screaming into the crowd. I kept on playing my drums.

After it was all said and done, the biggest blow to the event people was that we won first prize. The show had a big gift certificate to a local music shop, based on the audience votes for the best band, and they had to give it to us.

We were by far the worst.
But we almost started a riot. At least, some semblance of one.
The mob liked it.

I really, really wish I could have been in the audience for that. What did you spend the certificate on?

We split it up between the bandmembers, but concentrated on what needed upgrading the most. My drums got all new heads, extra sticks, etc. Guitarist got new strings, some pedals if I recall correctly. Think there was a mic or two purchased. Just various different equipment for the band.

That's good to hear that it got spread equally. So are you guys still together? What are you doing music wise these days?

Oh no, that was in my highschool years in the 90s. Different time and place.
I don't play with anyone anymore, but I'd still love to do so. For now it's just solo here-and-theres for my own amusement, and collabs with a friend.

Ah okay! I will need to check out more of your stuff, I know you're talented but just keep forgetting to check out MB Showcase.

I don't really post much on there. I don't really output frequently enough, much to my music friend's chagrin.

The band should blow off the gig and instead take massive doses of blotter acid and spend the night wandering around the sand dunes in Death Valley National Park. There's an old Native American shaman living among the dunes who will provide you with fame and fortune beyond your wildest dreams.

Seriously, good luck with your debut gig and don't forget to bring plenty of ice cold beverages and an extra set of guitar strings along.

For those who are interested in knowing the show was great! In the green room and bathrooms past bands had their signatures everywhere and I even got to see where Kurt Cobain had signed back in '91! My band rocked hard and we had a great turnout so all in all it was the best night of my life :) Plus I didn't drop a drumstick (my biggest on stage fear)!

btw we didn't have time to grab guitar strings so our guitarist did end up breaking two strings but one of the other bands were nice enough to let us use their guitars :)

Nice of them to let you use them! I once saw a band have an inventive way of continuing the song whilst the guitarist changed strings - half way through Purple Haze he snapped his lower string so while he mended it the drummer did a John Bonham-esque interlude! (think of the one in Whole Lotta Love.)

Congrats on the good gig! Keep up the good work and become famous. Destroy some stuff.
