Favorite Beautifully Sad Album

Just looking to compile a list of albums that fit the titles description, for me its Radiohead - The Bends. And a close second would probably be Regina Spektor - Begin to Hope.

Jandek - Blue Corpse

Haunting, depressing, some people even thought he killed himself after this album (as it is with a lot of his work).

Elliott Smith Either/Or

or any Elliot Smith album for that matter.

Trollheart 06-04-2013 01:17 PM

This one. Even the cover screams desolation and loneliness.

Antimatter --- Planetary confinement

Here's a sample.

Insight especially but the whole thing is just genuinely depressing (evident when he topped himself not long after.)

The songs are like suicide notes in places.

Fantastic album, but if there's one album that has suicide note written all over it it's their last studio album Closer. I like to think of Closer as Ian Curtis' parting message to the world.

Also...

Yes I know I harped on about it in my journal recently but here it is again. 'Beautifully sad' doesn't even begin to describe it.

I was going to say Elliott Smith as well. His music was so beautiful and sad.

There are a couple of duds on it but it was made as a plea by John get back with his wife.

Beth Gibbons (Portishead) and Rustin Man ( Talk Talk bassist Paul Webb)

Of course.

From The Swans to this. Michael Gira moves effortlessly through 2 completely different genres of music whilst maintaining a crushingly bleak outlook on life.

Oh I almost forgot about this one, Waiting for A Miracle by the Comsat Angels. It was the soundtrack to my depressive episode of 09

Screen13 06-04-2013 06:16 PM

Three come to mind...

Closer - Joy Division
It'll End in Tears - This Mortal Coil
Berlin - Lou Reed

I'll think of more later

Really good album that. I haven't played it for a couple of years. Fischer Z and Notekillers come to mind as well from the same era. Oh and The Chameleons - Script of the Bridge too.

Never was fond of the Chameleons, I always found them to be rather boring. This was a last.fm recommendation, after I listened to the New Order radio, I believe.

Current 93 - All The Pretty Little Horses

Current 93 is incapable of writing a happy song but every track on this one cuts to the bone....the opening line is "Why Can't we all just walk away?".....musically every track is beautiful despondent and the lyrics are nothing short of pure misery but perfectly poetic

My Morning Jacket - The Tennessee Fire

I love this album, but it's hard for me to get through because of just how depressing it is. Isolation pervades nearly every track.

Unknown Pleasures gives me a similar listening experience.
