I'm not very surprised by any of the NME selections, including the Smiths. If you're an avid reader of NME the top 25 albums are precisely the sort of glam rock, Brit rock and indie rock that NME has passionately advocated for the past four decades. I am surprised that none of the Roxy Music albums made the list. Roxy really revolutionized British rock and spawned legions of imitators and followers.

The selections Marvin Gaye, Kanye West and Public Enemy were mild surprises for me. But not really... It seems that every alternative rock critic includes a few token hip-hip and/or soul artists on his favorite lists.

I'm also surprised that NME didn't select Kala by M.I.A. who is the most notable rapper to ever come from the U.K.

Slick Rick. Then there's Wiley & Dizzee...

As far as the #1 choice goes, they could've done a hell of a lot worse. The Queen is Dead is a damn fine album.

The absence of 'The Dark Side of the Moon' to me is severe.

Agreed. Meat Is Murder is better than The Queen is Dead by a landslide. It's my favorite Smiths record.

As for this thread. These lists are so tiring nowadays that I see no point in looking too much into them.

Is it just me who thinks there are very divided opinions on Meat is Murder?

The NME has always been crap anyhow. The only list that is important regarding albums is your own fave list, you only have to disagree with yourself every couple of years and not a whole bunch of bedroom vinyl vampires.

This I agree with 100%. People are their own best and worst critic.

Just heard Meat is Murder. Still think The Queen is Dead is better and that its predecessor is little more than a good warmup. It's not bad, though, and maybe I'll grow on it.

Isbjørn 11-29-2013 02:46 PM

...aaand I grew on it. Just needed a second listen.
