Major bummer though, this will be the last Gridlink album, and probably the last one Jon Chang makes with any band

What?! Why?

Mondo Bungle 01-08-2014 02:06 PM

I dunno, just the way he feels I guess.

In a few weeks you guys will lay your hands on the last GridLink record and probably the last record I will ever make. It wasn't always going to be that way, but during the recording I realized that this was the end of the line for me. I don't think I will make a better record and I don't want to be in a band with anyone other than Takafumi Matsubara, who was cashing out his chips as well. This is a hard genre to play in. I've loved the style since I first heard it in the late 80's, via Napalm Death, however I have been notoriously critical of the genre and really only ever liked a handful of bands that play "grind"(I have gone so far as to say 99% of bands that call themselves grindcore are just playing short death metal songs). It's earned me a lot of scorn over the years but I haven't lost any sleep over it
But they got violins and original Assuck vocalist, so it's gonna be epic.

An epic 14 minute album.

Well, I hope Chang ends up deciding to continue on doing something because he's a guy whose vision I enjoy. I'd love to see him do something like get involved with some noisy experimental jazz or something.

Stephen Malkmus' new album is pretty decent. Not amazing but good - pretty much as expected.

I probably wouldn't even have checked it out but I'm seeing the Jicks in Glasgow on Tuesday, so yeah. Pretty good.

I will be at the same gig! Album is alright but that's not even the appeal just excited to see such a legend in the flesh. Would be pretty neat if he slipped in some Pavement or Silver Jews but apparently he never does that :(

Good man! I'm looking forward to it, Oran Mor's usually a pretty good venue for this type of gig too. Some Pavement/SJ's would be ****ing great but yeah, doubt it'll happen though like you say.

He recently covered Can's Ege Bamyasi record, would be interesting to hear him play some of that ... again, I doubt it though!

Moss 01-11-2014 04:19 PM

I have seen Pavement and solo Malkmus and both were amazing. Don't think there will be any Pavement at the Solo show by there is so much good solo stuff it should not matter. That Can album is stellar, got it on colored vinyl. Im jealous.

I can't believe nobody's mentioned Foster the People's new album coming out, I figured they were too mainstream to keep from being mentioned. Well I guess that just means everyone that's seen this thread so far is a major hipster.
Foster the People - Supermodel (March 18th)
Also Damon Albarn has an album called Everyday Robots coming out April 29th.

Hipsters love Foster The People though, so what does that say about you?

I know that's what I was thinking. I wasn't trying to be offensive or some kind of music snob or anything. I was just suprised the album hadn't been mentioned yet. Everyone's getting really excited for it (I know I am).

My flat mate went to the same gig
He asked if I wanted to go with, but the only solo Malkmus project I liked was his first album with the Jicks, the self titled 'Stephen Malkmus'

If you're not trying to be offensive a good starting point would be not to insult people here you barely know. Try chilling and listening to what people are enjoying rather than just calling everyone here hipsters. Not a great way to make friends. Also, people will take what you say more seriously if you're at least civil. The old saying holds true: you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

If you have a problem with people discussing non mainstream music maybe you're better suited to a TMZ forum.

James 01-24-2014 12:43 PM

That post wasn't offensive to anyone in the slightest. Seriously. How sensitive are you all? Give the guy a chance.

To be completely honest I kind of want to insult you at this point because I'M a little offended by this. How is calling someone a hipster in any way offensive? And regardless of that calling people hipsters was A JOKE. I was just pointing out that an album wasn't on the list in a creative manner (It's called a sense of humor. I understand that not everyone's going to find it funny but getting offended is a little much). I don't mean to jump all over you but GEEZ you're not helping me like this site anymore then I did before. You and that urban hat guy who seems to think that mentioning two well known artists makes me unfit to discuss lesser known artists :finger:
