Well, Wikipedia gives two possible explanations for the name, both don't make it seem any less retarded:

When I was younger and really into them, it sounded kind of tough and dark, I never really thought of it as dumb or silly. I think I was just so consumed with the dark and scary sound of the music and imagery to realize that it really is quite silly, probably even more so to someone who doesn't know their music.

Same here, well actually I guess it was more like I didn't think about the name one way or the other. It wasn't until I was a lot older that started thinking about how silly it sounds and wondering why anyone would choose to name their band that.

I still love their music though. :)
