Eurovision 2014 Thread
 

Hi guyssss! It's that time of year again and I'm here to keep you updated about all the Eurovision goodness our lovely eardrums will have the pleasure of listening to this season!

Most of the songs have already been announced, so bear with me as I present them in groups. If you want to post songs you've heard or like (or are from your country or whatever), I welcome you to. I understand that that is probably not going to happen though.

Let me preface this thread with a warning that Eurovision seems to be heading in two prominent directions this year: those with a love for baked goods and those with a taste for bringing folk back in a way that only compares to...well every other Eurovision competition ever.

So let's begin with what I think are the most "folky" sounding songs this year, from Malta, Ireland, and Switzerland.



So, Malta's "Coming Home" by Firelight, eh? One word for this: boring. Not bad, but it really shouldn't be at Eurovision. I'm not even mildly interested. But like I said. Not a bad song.



Can-linn's "Heartbeat" for Ireland is rather formulaic. It sounds like a winner. It's not bad, either, I won't be mad if it wins. It has the uplifting celtic chorus thing, the bad lyrics, the poppy single-singer ballad thing going for it. She's not a great singer though, so it might not do that well. Toss-up.



From Switzerland, Sebalter - Hunter of Stars. Well this is surprisingly addictive actually. Aside from the singer's lack of keeping tempo (or is that intentional), I really enjoy this track. I've been jamming to it all week.

When does it actually start up?

There are three days of Eurovision, DJ. Two semi-finals (May 6 & 8), and the final is on Saturday, May 10.

However, the national competitions (often more fun than Eurovision itself) start in December. :)

As promised, I present you Eurovision 2014 songs about cake.

The first is one of my favorites this year: it's Latvia, with Aarzemnieki's "Cake To Bake." I find it so adorable when he says "I even learned Latvian! I know, it's so hard to believe!"

Also: "Mix some dough, add some love, let it bake, wait fo' it..." is so sweet and pronounced so cutely! Awww those Latvians. <3



The second song is Teo's "Cheesecake" from Belarus. If you listen to just one Eurovision song this year, let this be it. It's absolutely hilarious all around, and the lyrics make no sense whatsoever (if you can even figure out what he's saying). That makes it all kind of genius.



"Just not to meet you on my way don't stay on my way HAAAAAY"

Also, it's just weird. Weird in a fresh and embarrassing way all at once. Genius. Oh, Belarus.

I present you the ballads of Eurovision 2014!
Let's begin.

Azerbaijan's "Light A Fire" by Dilara Somethingova is boring, flat, and not interesting.



It would be entertaining for me if she doesn't make it through to the final because Azerbaijan has been involved in a possible vote bribery ring and I'm really sick of their act.

Albania is sending "One Night's Anger."



With a voice kind of like Shakira, poor Hersi feels a bit held back by this slow, twisty-melody song. Not to mention that the Albania version was so much better, English does not do her voice justice! I have to say, if there's one country where the entries sort of have coherence over the years, it's Albania. I feel like their entries from 2010-2014 go together well. I really like their work, but I wish this song could be in Albanian!

Albania was perfectly ROBBED last year when this amazing rock/balled song did not make it to the semi-final. So much more energy than most of the crap that got through. Anyway, I have high hopes for them this year.

Belgium is sending Axel Hirsoux, with his sort of embarrassing song, Mother.



Okay, I'm not sure if I should actually post this in a different group (which would be for 'out-there' entries), but it's such a perfect ballad I think it needs to be here. Uhhh...I don't actually have anything to say about though and I don't recommend watching it.

I'm pretty pleased with Spain this year. "Dancing in the Rain" by Ruth Lorenzo is nice. Her voice is great, hearing Spanish here and there is refreshing, and the song is uplifting!



My favorite ballad of the ones in this group. Definitely. I think Spain has a chance to make it in the top 10 this year, which will basically be a first. We can hope! Spain is used to coming in the bottom 5 (and usually with pretty good songs), but what can they do. This song was not a bad idea.
