Looking For Ideas For Music

Hello, I have been doing music for all of my life. I have perfect pitch, can compose, and i play cello and piano. Every year their is a big talent competition inside of our state that i always enjoy participating in. I have won 2nd place every year I have participated. Usually I do something that i have composed. However this year my creative juices are not flowing and i can't compose anything good enough for it. I have resolved that i need to arrange something.

I am looking for a good song that is mostly instrumental (little or no singing/lyrics) that is exciting, new, has a good followable beat and is NOT A RECENTLY POPULAR SONG AS EVVVVEEERRRYYYONEE DOES THOSE. Here are the instruments i have at my disposal.
  • 2 Cello's
  • 2 violins
  • 1 violist (not that good)
  • 1 acoustic bass (can also do electric bass)
  • 1 singer
  • 3 keyboard players
  • 2 guitarists

Can anyone think up a good song that I might do? It HAS to be a crowd pleaser because someone can play Rachmaninoff's piano concerto and get no attention, while you can play beauty and the beast and everyone thinks your a prodigy. I just want to crowd to be happy as this is the last year i get to participate in this :(

I did think of one song the link is below, however i cant figure out the rythms for the life of me and im not sure if its quite exciting enough for an audience. You can find the video by searching "Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy - Soundtrack - Main Theme" The best part is 30 seconds in

You could substitute the harp for something else. Maybe a classical guitar?

If you could pull of this classic frank song you would probably blow them away. I can't post links yet damn't but look up peaches en regalia on youtube. The Zappa Plays Zappa version is a good example.

WOW those are both really close however not quite... some parts of the beatles instrumental are abit too boring... and i really like the peaches en regalia however i would worry about how easy that one would be to arrange and if i have the right instruments. I have no woodwind or brass friends.

If you only had a string quartet to work with, you could do the faster-paced Eleanor Rigby. Perhaps use the keyboardist and guitarist to do the vocal line (not shown here).

I don't know how long of a piece you need but one of the most intense and creative orchestral pieces ever is the Atom Heart Mother Suite by Pink Floyd. That uses a choir though aswell but the original was just guitar, keys, bass, and drums. So you could add on and make it work I think. Either way give that song a listen it is epic, they have a live video for it on youtube too.

It's too bad you've got no woodwinds or brass because I've just been thinking of a bunch of other songs that would be great, but they've all got flutes, trumpets and so on in them. :( I suppose you could substitute those but it wouldn't be the same.

If you don't mind a sad song this only has a few small segments of brass which could easily be substituted. The rest is just piano and strings.

OOOH if only i was a musical genius like the guy who wrote this... it would be fun to arrange... maybe just instrumental or with one of the many stories covered here (cutting out other lyrics). This one might be fun to do... AUGGG why can't the perfect peace come floating to me!

Another sad song, but this has no brass at all, just piano and strings. Occasionally is an electric keyboard(?) of some sort I can't quite make out.
