Album that changed your musical outlook

At bit of background information first: Well, growing up, my dad had by far the largest impact on my musical tastes.

He was a kid at the tail end of the 1960s, and most of the records he owns are of the various rock genres including experimental, prog, psychedelic, jam, and a ton of folk as well as some jazz fusion and blues.


Anyway, when I was born he had really stopped listening to a lot of records cause he was too busy with his job, but I remember that there was one record he would play rather frequently when I was a kid.




There is no album that had more of an impact on my musical interest than this.

Willie The Pimp, and Son of Mr. Green Genes really set off a chain reaction that led to me listening to genres and bands that revolved around the electric guitar and the amplifier. (Note: The iTunes Store was released when I was 10 years-old, so music was really easy to access)

I gravitated towards bands like Blink-182, AC/DC, and Metallica (All the Small Things, Back in Black, and Sad But True are easily my favorite songs by those bands, bar none).

It also led me to dislike most folk rock songs (I still dislike Stairway To Heaven and most Grateful Dead songs), hardcore heavy metal that bore no resemblance to blues, jazz fusion, or rock (doom, and death metal), and songs without any instrumentation (simple pop songs).

And lastly, instrumental songs compose a substantial amount of the music I listen to thanks to this album (which has no real lyrics).

As you can see from Nick here, this album changed my life, ive never really had any musical idols before the pixies, i didn't think i would be a fan of any band really, ive always liked alot of artists but few of them reach me personally, and among them the one that gets me the most is the pixies (specifically Frank black)

When i first heard this album i hated it, but i remember my friend assuring me it was just i didn't get it yet, but i remember liking 'Gouge away' right away and that's how i gradually got into them.

After i liked them a bit i put in the 2nd Cd (it's 2 CD album btw) which is them live and Holy sh*t was my mind blown!

i got obsessed with Hangwire and haven't looked back since.

Nothing was ever the same once I came to love it.

I could name quite a few albums that shaped my musical preference (at the time) but I feel like discussing the album that has probably had the most influence on my tastes in the past year:

Before I got absolutely hooked on this album I would not bother listening to mainstream artists in general. I would avoid the likes of Lana Del Rey, Rihanna, Bruno Mars etc. (though I did have a Lady Gaga phase a while back) because I assumed I couldn't possibly enjoy them as much as I the latest groovy new underground Hip Hopper on the scene. But that all changed.

Now I am far more pro-active in terms of seeking pop music that I enjoy. Sure, it's not all for me, but neither is every Avant-Garde Jazz outfit.

A side-effect of this pop obsession has been increased standards/needs from Hip Hop music (not sure why it seems to have only effected my tastes in Hip Hop though) as I am seemingly more picky.

This album opened my eyes (and ears) and since its release I've never looked back. It has been in my regular weekly rotation since its release some forty years ago.

The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls In America

I first heard this as an impressionable 16 year old looking for something exciting and different than what I had been listening to in the past. This was it, and after hearing this I started the path to my current music taste.

When i saw this thread i was like "i wonder how many posts until frownland posts TMR"

What can I say? It's the first album that came to mind.

Another one for me is Freestyle Fellowship's "To Whom It May Concern" because it reversed my hatred of hip-hop and pushed me to look further into the genre, and now I listen to it all the time.

Cats and Dogs made me feel like all the good rock music that had come before it was leading up to this album. I couldn't stop listening to it when it came out and it's still a favorite.

This album made me realize that music was amazing in the early part of the 20th century. I still prefer Bix & Tram to most of the music that has been made since.

This album really changed music for me and left such a huge impact on my taste. Before this album in my early years I listened to alot of stuff with my dad mostly classic rock and old school metal. But one day when I was 13 my brother told me to listen to this album and it blew my mind. Still one of my all time favorite albums
