Music Videos That Have Aged Well

A lot of the time music videos are pretty faddish in terms up how they're shot and put together, and as a result they tend to age badly. But there are some that stand the test of time fairly well and are still evocative or nice to look at many years after the fact. What are some of your favorites?

One that comes to mind for me is Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" video from 1984. I've always like the bittersweet mood of this video and I think, even if you don't like the song, it's hard to deny that it's well shot, especially compared to other videos from that time period.

Primus and their claymation have stood the test of time for me:

First, i wanna say i agree with all of you, good exmpls :)

@Janzoon

Saw the vid and it's true, im surprised that was from 84 the camera shots look very modern.

@Plankton

Good point, did you ever see Alice in chains 'i stay away' Claymation video? that video still creeps me out.

Claymation or animation if done well can remain contemporary even through out the years. i was gonna post Green jelly's 3 little pigs cause even though the Claymation is a little outdated the silliness and randomness of it still feels very modern.

That is so cool your a Pixies nut. U score points with me. I've been a huge fan for many years. I have all of his solo efforts, which are awesome. My wife and I had tix to see them about an hour west about a year ago. Big snow storm, we couldn't make it, but the show went on, unfortunately. I never saw them live

I think pretty much all REM videos have stood the test of time, but three of them stand out for me. Orange Crush, Losing My Religion, and Man on the Moon.

Orange Crush (1988):

Losing My Religion (1991):

Man on the Moon (1992):

Likewise, it's nice to meet another fan as well. :)

It's a bummer you missed them but they're touring again with their new line up so maybe you catch them this time.

Same as me, ive followed Kim's career with the amps and the breeders and ive also followed Frank black's solo career and with the catholics.

Frank black is kinda like my music idol. i luv almost everything the guy does.

@BD

Fully agree on loosing my religion, honestly that's one of the best music videos ive ever seen, it fits perfectly with the song and it's equally as misleading :p:

This video still looks good imo

Funny you should say that Black Francis, I came into this thread to post Bjork and my personal favourite ever music video.

Euronomus 04-03-2014 08:01 PM

Pretty much anything from Spike Jonze\Chris Cunningham - Weapon of Choice, All is Full of Love, Sabotage, Come to Daddy, Window Licker, Buddy Holly, Only You, Come On My Selector

but this will probably always be my favorite video:

Black Francis 04-03-2014 08:22 PM

Musicwhore A-Z 05-08-2015 09:18 PM

Here are some that immediately come to mind:

1. 'Every Breath You Take' - The Police ( 1983 ). Less is MORE. Classic!

2. 'Land Of Confusion' - Genesis ( 1986 ). Gabriel was probably envious!

3. 'Mouth For War' - Pantera ( 1992 ). Cool look and in your face.

4. 'Jeremy'- Pearl Jam ( 1991 ). An eerie precursor to Columbine. Chilling!

5. 'Hero' - Warrior Soul ( 1991 ). A salute to the blue collar worker.

Interestingly, I think the videos that have held up over time better are the ones with a dark element to them. That was especially true with videos from the early 90's in particular. Great thread ( :wavey: ).

David Bowie - Ashes to Ashes

The song was release in 1980, and I guess the promo video was too - I'm not sure. The special effects was playing with the color control knobs till the sky turn black and the water as well. I thought it was very existential and similar to the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, in the way there are nonlinear unfolding of events in the character's life, much like the ending of 2001.

Lilja 05-09-2015 02:08 AM

I think these three have aged well.

misspoptart 05-11-2015 12:51 PM

I'll never forget that running unicorn from the Enigma video. I totally agree with that choice, Lilja! :)

William_the_Bloody 05-12-2015 09:44 PM

Aphex Twin - Window Licker

The Perfect Drug - Nine Inch Nails

Black Francis 05-13-2015 12:54 AM

Anyone remembers the era where Hype williams was directing all the hip hop videos? :p:
