Genre Wars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, you always have to have at least six exclamation marks, don't cha? Or exclamation points, if you prefer...

Simple enough: genre takes on genre. Take into account that although you may be a metal head you may like the hotness of a pop star, or maybe you're a keys person and like prog versus the anger of punk? Who knows? Let's see how we get on with the first pairing...

Metallica -- Jump in the fire (Genre: Heavy Metal; Subgenre: Thrash Metal)

versus
Alex Gaudino feat Crystal Waters --- Destination Calabria (Genre: Pop; Subgenre: Electronica/Dance)

James 05-07-2014 11:47 AM

What are these genres? And why do these particular songs represent them?

djchameleon 05-07-2014 12:05 PM

We are just supposed to listen to each song and pick which one we prefer?

yeah a minor note in parenthesis about what the specific genres are would be nice or will that be revealed later on?

Plankton 05-07-2014 12:16 PM

Not fair at all putin that booty in my face, but I'll take substance over style all day long.

+1 Metal-lickers

But there's plenty of music in that genre with substance. I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS THREAD.

Got something to back that statement up? I mean, the musicianship of a full band that actually PLAYS their instruments versus a programmed beat with sound samples. Substance vs Style.

FWIW, I'm not a real fan of 'genre's'. I cringed a bit even while typing that.

Honestly I'm not the person to ask. I know next to nothing about electronic music. I'm sure someone else can help us out though.

Low blow!

Plankton 05-07-2014 12:36 PM

This thread needs an instruction manual.

James 05-07-2014 12:39 PM

The second one has a better video.

djchameleon 05-07-2014 12:45 PM

I am used to seeing a different video with that song but I will go with the second one.

Plankton 05-07-2014 12:46 PM

I think TH just wanted to show everyone that booty.

Love the booty.

kiekiekie

djchameleon 05-07-2014 12:48 PM

Yeah more booty in this video. In the other it is only three girls shaking it.

Frownland 05-07-2014 12:51 PM

If this were booty wars I'd definitely pick the second track. Sorry Metallica.

It can be downloaded here: http://www.trollheart.com/manualgenre.png

Seriously. The genres are (I would have thought obviously) Metal and Pop. Or if you prefer, Electronic(a). I chose those two because a) Metallica can turn out to be very popular in the metal community but some people hate them and b) booty.

Nah, I want to see how many, if any, people choose style over substance in this example. In other words, are you watching the jiggling booties (Franco) saying "I hate this but booty booty" or are you saying "I hate this and Metallica rules?"

Man, don't everyone take everything so serious all the time. It's just fun. Remember that? Don't have to have a manifesto to explain it. Though if you need one, here's mine...

Trollheart 05-07-2014 01:05 PM

I'd make it Booty Wars but, you know, Google...

So at the moment it stands, I think at

Metallica - 2
Booty - 0

Inter-esting....

(Not sure which one Frown is going for)

James 05-07-2014 01:09 PM

I think I prefer pop to metal even though both these songs are awful and I enjoy both those genres. So 2 - 1 I guess.

[quote]My vote goes to thrash[\quote]

By thrash I meant Metallica because they're one of the big four. I thought I updated the count with my vote, should it be 3-1 now?

Black Francis 05-07-2014 01:21 PM

I vote for booty even though the song was awful.

They used to play that song at a club i frequented.

Ninetales 05-07-2014 01:23 PM

What is this. If it were just genres id vote metal but Metallica is boring and bad so I can't in good conscience vote for them ever. The pop song isn't really that good either but at least I could dance like an idiot to it if called upon. And it has nothing to do with the video but sure lets pretend Metallica is "substance" here. Good lord.

EDIT: I think this is the score now:

Bad Metal band - 3
Ok pop song - 3

Depends how you define an instrument. Here's a clip of araabMUZIK performing live:

Using a 64 key sampler with different samples loaded into each and using that to play live can be just as difficult as a blazing guitar sample. A lot of music out there actually "played" on instruments is ridiculously easy. You think it's hard to play a simple bass line compared to hitting each loop at exactly the right time?

Here's another sort of "instrument" that again requires tons of practice to master, just like a guitar or the drums:

As for emotion, a song like "Born Slippy" to me conveys just as deep emotion as a song by a band with bass, guitar, drums, and vocals:

They use a mix of electronic and live guitars/vocals.

I hate the argument that people make when they say "Oh well that's not hard I can make an electronic song right now". Well you know what? I bet I can teach someone that hasn't touched a guitar in their life how to perform a simple song in an hour or two.

You're free to like whatever you want, but there's no need to say entire styles of music have no value.

Holy crap, I was just talking about the tunes in the OP.

I know all of what you're saying, I just don't listen or even seek out that type of thing. Thanks for all that though.

...and yes I do know what. Just for the record. I can't stand people that use that term. It always leads to some grandstanding BS. Good luck in your endeavors.

music_phantom13 05-07-2014 09:04 PM

Haha sorry if that came across as harsh. You did say got something to back that statement up, I get annoyed because I hear lots of people say the same thing about hip hop producers - that it doesn't take any sort of skill or anything. It's a pet peeve of mine.

Hey no problem, I get the same way when it comes to playing guitar.
