What is it called when music cuts to silence?

What is it called when music cuts to silence?

Preferably as in at the end of a song, but for my purposes the term for a bit of silence in a song works to.

Rest?

Cicatrice 06-01-2014 08:38 PM

Well if you mean suddenly then it Rest would cover it. But if you mean a semi gradual start or stop to a song maybe a fade in or fade out?

A Coda?

In classical music, you might call a non-ending pause a caesura.

But then, you're likely not looking for classical terminology. A break, maybe? Do you have any musical example of what it is you're thinking?

It would be called a punch if it were in the middle. But at the end I guess, it's called "play till it fades" :)

You just won the internets.

An improvement (if Nickelback)

I had the cops walk into my house and unplug my amp once while I was playing. Not sure what to call that. Coptus interruptus? Warrantless entry? Moss Unplugged?

I guess the word you are looking for is "tacet."

I'd call that "Cop missing a hand". *slice* Don't ever touch my ****.

Cops came to shut down our band one night a few years ago (band practice... it gets pretty loud, you know the deal where one guitarist turns up, then the other tries to turn up more, and the cycle keeps going), and instead of telling us to shut it down, they stayed for the rest of our set.
