Jolene

whats your favourite version?

dolly parton
the white stripes

personally, though i respect the original, the stripes version simply kicks the proverbial arsehole. its the kind of song that goes well with a drumkit and guitar- and they just blow it out of the water making it sound so heavy and moving.

yours?

Olivia Newton-John covered it in the 70's and Mindy Smith covered it @ 2 yrs ago. I like her version of it, although I haven't heard the White Stripes version.

I completely agree with Stu. It's unusual for me to prefer a cover to the original, I just think the White Stripe's version sounded even more pained.

I'm sure many people would say Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah was possibly better than the original too. Are there any others?

Hmmm....Lots of the White Stripes covers are good, I Just Dont Know, and St. James Infirmary Blues...Otherwise, yeah theyre about as rare as a good emo band. Hmmm.... Oh anyone heard The Strokes version of The Clash's Clampdown? Thats a first class cover, though maybe its not better. Same with Futureheads Hounds Of Love...

Or maybe thats my Kate Bush fetish talking again

Yeah, i like the origional, but the white stripes did a damn good job of it.
