80's Appreciation

Whats your favorite song/band/video/genre/hair-do/whatever of the 80's? (for the few of us that actually remember the 80s)

Sneer 07-01-2005 10:19 AM

THE PIIIIXXXXIIIIEEEEESSSSS. lately ive come to appreciate motley crue a bit more. still wouldnt say im a fan but i at least respect them now for their overtly excessive grandeur brand of stereotypical 80s trash-rock.

Fenixpunk 07-01-2005 10:28 AM

lots of good 80's rock/metal...for starters how about:
Twisted Sister, Overkill, Helloween, Anthrax, Scorpions, Ratt, Celtic Frost?

I went to high school in the 80's.

I loved (and still do) ska...the music, the fashion, the lifestyle, Dance Craze!, punk..mostly british stuff, the music, the fashion and the lifestyle, The Clash and The Jam changed my life! and some new wave Devo, Depeche Mode, Joy Division and other pioneers of the genre.

The worse thing about the 80's (besides crimped hair, acid washed anything and argyle socks) was Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and all the right wing political brainwashing that was going on..allthough it gave us something to rebel against, there was alot of real fear being drilled into our heads...especially when you're a teenager.

band: guns n roses
song: paradise city-guns n roses

those are all i know of the 80s. sorry. but i do like other bands besides gnr. def leppard, skid row, white snake. othe stuff that i cant think of. unfortunately im a little too young to know too much about the 80s but at least i know something, eh? ;)

adidasss 07-04-2005 12:21 PM

the 90's rocked 80's ass!!!

holdyoualways 07-04-2005 12:24 PM

nah. the 90s sucked. the only good thing that came out of the 90s were...well i actually cant think of anything.

The 80's were great because it was just a period of mindless self-indulgence and the music reflected that. During the 80's it all seemed pretty dumb, but retrospectively it was really cool, especially the hair metal bands.

Musically, the 80's was interesting. I graduated in 82, so by the time the full 80's sound had arrived, I was in my early to mid 20's.

We had survived disco, and punk had run it's course. Punk is still around, but not in the forefront like it was in the late 70's early 80's, but that's another subject.

With the advent of MTV, suddenly, it was important to look good as well as sound good, with, eventually, the sound actually taking a back seat to the image.

Musically, the sound went from guitars to synths. Sparse, etheral ambiance was the flavor of the day. Androgenous look, mascara, metallic sports coats, a ton of hair spray, etc. Duran Duran, Billy Idol, Michael Jackson, Simple Minds, Tears For Fears, Psychadelic Furs, Big Country, Echo and the Bunnymen,Prince, etc, capitalized on the MTV vehicle.

The pop smacked of the residue of disco. Madonna, Tayor Dayne, etc, put the dance music back on the charts, and rap burst onto the mainstream scene with the advent of "Yo! MTV Raps". The face of music was changing, as suburban kids were exposed to black artists, and while they might not have been able to relate, they certainly embraced the image. Crossover chart toppers became the norm.

As far as the music goes, there was some good music to come from the 80's. Modern English's 'Melt With You', Soft Cell's 'Tainted Love', Flock of Seagulls' 'I Ran' are some of my favorite 80's tunes.

Also on the charts was the ahir metal. Cinderella, Poison, Ratt, The Crue, Skid Row. All the spawn of KISS fans of the late 70's. All about having a good time and partying. They rivaled the New-Wavers in the makeup and VO-5 department. It became fluffy glam.

MTV killed musical integrity. It was about looking good and having a good time. Don't get me wrong, though, there is a lot of good 80's music out there.

Mmm, characterizing any decade by its VH-1 friendly fads is going to make it look like sh*t.

Try a little New Order, Talking Heads, Teardrop Explodes, Echo and The Bunnymen, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, The Smiths, Psychedelic Furs, The Cure, Blondie, Joan Jett, Flaming Lips, Prince, Social Distortion, Minor Threat, The Pixies, Bauhaus, Jesus and Mary Chain, Gang of Four, Sonic Youth, The Clash, Husker Du, Black Flag, The Germs, Circle Jerks, Reagan youth.

There's my abbreviated appreciation for the 80s, which I just justified as my favorite decade for music.

Krosstika 07-05-2005 11:57 AM

Well being that i was born in 75...and was a youthful brat through much of the 80's i guess i could say that i had no 'real' understanding of what music was all about, during the 1980's.
...But i do know i was very into 'The Police' and am still to this day, also the likes of Queen,Kate Bush,Duran Duran,Spandau Ballet,Roxy Music were just some of the artists played within my household...
80's music was great, seems to me it was a time when being expressive musicaly than any other period was what it was all about, shoulder pads and men wearing more make-up than the girls!!! prolly because MTV had just come about!....which commercialised music more than ever before!

and in my eyes, thats not a good thing...thats a bad thing! just look at MTV today....its horrific!

neckbreaker 07-05-2005 05:16 PM

The 80's was a great decade for music. Who doesn't like "one Night in Bangkok" by Murray Head, "Purple Rain", "Manic Monday", or "Axel F", which by the way is now making its rounds as a mobile phone ringtone. The 80's was about feel-good music, and getting over the nightmare we call disco.
