best national anthem of all time
hands down.

Not saying it's necessarily the best (although it was written by Joseph Haidn), but it's definitely my favorite. My military school's anthem actually used the music to this song, just with changed lyrics. Once I found this out I memorized the German version and would sing it at school assemblies. I can actually still remember and sing the first verse, and part of the second.

Before your video loaded I was seriously wondering if the Pixies had recorded a version of the American National Anthem. ;)

i really doubt that's something they would do but if they did you bet i would like to hear it even if it's awful. |
But they didn't write the national anthem.

The Politzania National Anthem is the best. Go to 6:16 of the video

I've a soft spot for ours of course. (Please ignore the Bojack Horseman ad at the start...)
|
I'd have to go with the Rush version (on the Southpark movie soundtrack) of O Canada. It has an almost creepy vibe to it.
|
Ahhh you guys seem to have left out the most heartwarming anthem of them all, which is, of course, the Turkish one.
I'm still working on learning the words, since it's required to become a citizen. I mean, they make you recite it (some rumors suggest you actually have to sing it) during your citizenship application interview. Niiiice. |
We don't actually have one, but if we did it'd be Jerusalem and that would be the best as it's a great song on it's own.
I've always liked Portugal's as well. |

I think this will always be the best...

Although it predates the rise of the Nazis, it is still seen as a symbol of german imperialism and is strongly frowned upon. The official german anthem nowadays is only the third verse. |

Not sayin' it's the best, but it's a national anthem that has made the headlines today, which makes it a winner of some sort I suppose.
The song: The news story: https://edition.cnn.com/2020/12/06/a...cli/index.html The verdict: In terms of World Music, this is a half-way house, a hybrid or a travesty that will not win the heart of purists. White Australian sentiments have been translated into the Eora language and sung to White Australian music. To me it sounds like a Celtic song sung in Gaelic and as such is a little disappointing as I had hoped for something more exotic. But, as with any half-way house, at least the journey has begun. In this case, the Australian sports organisations have set out on the journey to recognise Aboriginal culture. |
@Lisna that is a very clumsy and ironic way to acknowledge Aboriginal culture, but like you said, its better than nothing.
It's still patriotic bull**** of course and I'm probably biased, but I like the Dutch national anthem. It has a wonderful solemnity and a nice melody, and it's short. Here is an instrumental version so you don't have to hear a mass of people singing in Dutch, and we can pretend it's just an innocent piece of music and not creepy nationalism |
Yes, the music is nice, Marie, and just as much as the music, I enjoyed your description of it too! :)
|
USSR, of course.
|
I'll always choose the German anthem cause my military high school's school song was literally that with different lyrics so I could substitute the "bad" lyrics during school functions.
