I'm of the opinion that art allows for a broader perspective in defining it than food.

But... they're not making noise. Silence is silence. There's no difference between one silence and the next other than uncontrollable background noise. Whether you've "composed" something or not, it's still the same silence. You might as well just save yourself the effort and not write anything, cause there's no difference either way.

On the whole silent composition that has apparently blown up this thread again. A silent piece of music still had the intent to it, and can obviously be orchestrated. Now you can go with or go against this philosophy of music sculpture, but I remember an interview with Cage where he was saying something along the lines of a sound shouldn't be telling me how it feels, but should let me interpret my feelings onto it. He used traffic as an example of sounds that while not orchestrated he was saying after a long while create subtle rhythms. So go against it or not these silent compositions do have artistic merit as music weather liked it hated.

That's fine. I've listened to traffic too. It's hypnotic. But, as you said, it's not a composition. Neither is silence. Also, not disputing the artistic merit of a "silent composition", just its nature as a composition.
