Artist/Band of the Week, Week 1: Guns N Roses

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Please join me in my "artist/band of the week" project. My plan is to nominate one artist/band early Sunday of every week. During the week, anyone who wants to participate with me can listen to all of their albums (studio, EPs, live). Regarding greatest hits albums, I plan to list only songs that are different versions than the originals and songs not released on other albums. At first I was torn if live albums should be included, but I decided to keep them as they help to provide a full spectrum of the band/artist and their strengths/weaknesses.

If time allows, I suggest listening to each song at least twice. The goal by the end of the week is to select your favorite five songs. If you know the artist/band well enough to likely identify your top five right away, I still encourage you to listen to the songs before submitting your list.

Of course, the more people who participate, the more interesting this project will become. It will also be nice to use these lists to initiate some discussions. Even if there are disagreements, it should be fun seeing different perspectives.

My ultimate goal is to eventually have my top five favorite songs for each of my favorite 1000 bands. With this being said, I do not plan on going anywhere anytime soon. Hopefully I will get some people who will join me throughout, and even for bands they may not be a fan of. Even for artists I dislike, I know I can still usually identify their best music.

If you miss the timeline for any specific bands but you still want to participate, feel free to add your favorite five songs whenever you are able.

I will also include a link to a Grooveshark playlist for each artist/band I post. This should include all songs from start to finish (and cross referenced with Wikipedia). This takes me a little time to compile, but in the long run is better as Youtube and other websites have commercials or are not free.

I suggest not getting too caught up putting your top five in order. I consider it an accomplishment in itself narrowing down to five songs per band. You can rank your top five if you prefer. However, I will list mine in alphabetical order instead.

WEEK 1 ARTIST/BAND OF THE WEEK
Guns N Roses

Here is a playlist of all 100 Guns N Roses songs.
Grooveshark - Free Music Streaming, Online Music

My top five favorites are:
It's So Easy
November Rain
Rocket Queen
Sweet Child O' Mine
Welcome To The Jungle

Thank you for reading and I look forward to seeing your top five! Good luck and enjoy!

I personally am glad to see Rocket Queen here. Civil War is a solid song and Think about You is hugely underrated. Don't Cry has the longest sung note in the history of music, so worth top 5 alone for that LOL. 14 Years is alright but so many others I would put ahead of that one. Not a diss on that song, but just they have so many great songs from Appetite and the Illusions.

Come on: you seriously expect people to listen to a whole discography, twice, each week? Best of luck...

Why not? Once for sure so you can actually choose from their entire library (because of course singles are not always the best songs from any band) and I suggest twice or more if time because especially for bands/songs someone has not heard before or in a very long time, sometimes it takes twice or more to get a good feel for which songs are best.

We are all here because we love music, right? Why not choose a different band a week and focus on them? You can listen when doing whatever if you what; relaxing after school/work, while getting ready for school/work, while eating, while doing errands/chores, while doing pretty much anytime. Heck, some people can listen to music while at work. GNR has an average length discography at around 8 hours probably with 100 songs. Some bands will have only a few albums and of course some have much more.

I don't know. If this sounds like too much work, then pass. I just thought I came to the right place where people would enjoy listening to different music and sharing their thoughts.

It's a mixed bag here. Sometimes you'll get people that will take interest in your topic. Sometimes you'll get people that sort of laugh it off. Sometimes you'll get people that'll haze you over it. I'm used to it.

Off the top of my head:

Paradise City
Mr. Brownstone
Estranged
The Garden
November Rain

No one's going to be like, "hey this guy told me to listen to a single band's discography the whole way through twice, i'm totally going to use 100% of the free time i have this week to do that."

basically your idea is horrible. there's already plenty of people listening to "different" music and sharing their thoughts all over the damn forum

Estranged barely missed my top 5 list. I am glad to see it on someone else's list. One of their best!

If you think my idea is so terrible, then don't participate. I was going through one band a week regardless if anyone joins me. Basically one hour per day to listen to a band of the week and many bands will be less than that. And as I stated before, why not do something else while listening to the music if a person is so short on time throughout the week? Whatever.

Hopefully I get more people who post their top 5 GNR songs or at least discuss their thoughts on top 5s they see posted, rather than posts on how stupid my idea is.

Trollheart 04-19-2015 12:35 PM

I've no interest in your idea, but just to show you I'm not just throwing destructive criticism and derision at you, here's what I think might work better. Maybe. Because I seriously doubt you will find enough people interested in ANY band, never mind Guns n Roses, to do what you propose.

Have anyone interested take an album (once one is gone it can't be selected again) and choose their favourite track from that. That way, you have a much more manageable task: listen to one album, how hard can that be? Also, you get away from the possibility of people all choosing the same five tracks. Then compile a best-of list from that.

Just a suggestion: what you intend is highly unlikely to appeal to people here, most of whom work, study or mod, and many of whom have journals. I doubt anyone is going to have the time or interest to do what you ask. If I'm wrong and it takes off, so be it, fair play t'ya, but I wouldn't be laying any serious money down.

Psy-Fi 04-19-2015 01:09 PM

Good luck with your idea but all of the various album clubs we've had here don't last long even when people are asked to listen to just 1 album every week or every other week and comment on it. Unfortunately, outside of personal journals, there just doesn't seem to be enough interest here in the sort of thing you're proposing.

joenorwood77 04-19-2015 03:43 PM

Perhaps I will just use this website to contribute to other discussions going around. Regarding my artist/band of the week, I may just have a link to a music blog in my signature, if that is within the rules of this website. That way people here can join if they want, but on my blog it will hopefully just be people who want to contribute rather than those who do not want to participate. I do not care if I get only 3-5 people who play along.

joenorwood77 04-20-2015 02:03 AM

It is so annoying when I am compiling playlists for future bands of the week and Grooveshark has all but one or two songs. I know Youtube is an option but the commercials throughout an album are annoying. Spotify is another option, but I think some bands/artists do not allow their songs on Spotify. Any other main options I should consider for free streaming of entire albums of most bands?

joenorwood77 04-20-2015 03:03 AM

One more issue with Grooveshark is playlists I created some time ago are now missing songs. I most definitely do not want to compile entire catalogs for many bands, just to have missing songs down the road.

Trollheart 04-20-2015 09:11 AM

I've noticed this problem with Grooveshark too. Very annoying. Spotify is probably the best but I usually go with a mixture of YT, Spotify and Groove that normally gets me what I need. Occasionally it doesn't of course. There's Daily Motion but that's pretty much the same as YouTube. I also use a website where you can buy albums for less than a dollar, if you're so interested. I guess there's Pandora, though we can't get that here in Ireland so I don't know how good or bad it is. People talk about Soulseek too.

Sorry man, that's against our rules for signatures:

Quote:

For your first 3 months here only the following links will be approved.
  • Last FM charts
  • Any other social media sites as long as they are PERSONAL ones and not an outlet for music

Links that will not be approved that you may include after you have been here for 3 months
  • Band Websites,
  • Band Facebook pages
  • Any music streaming sites
  • Personal Blogs
  • Youtube channels

From here.

No worries. The rules make sense. So, after being here three months, I can add that stuff back (blog and RYM)?

Thanks. I guess there is no perfect method for online playlists to share with people. I can already tell Grooveshark will be too frustrating because songs can go missing at any time and many artists are already missing 1-3 songs from their entire library. YouTube has most albums but with commercials and missing some of the less popular albums. I do not have much experience yet with Spotify but it appears to have most albums but with commercials. I guess on Spotify with the free version at least won't waste skips when listening to entire playlists all the way through and just need to deal with commercials. While it was ideal to have all playlists on one site, I guess for the sake of this project, will need to use whichever resources I can use.

Regarding Grooveshark, I wonder what the main reasons are for tracks suddenly disappearing.

Trollheart 04-20-2015 01:53 PM

I haven't actually noticed tracks disappearing, but I don't use GS enough to notice that. I've just seen that on occasions when I need a particular album to review, a track or two may be missing --- or they may be out of sequence. I use the paid version of Spotify and once your album is there it's pretty cool. It's definitely worth paying 9.99 to get rid of ads.

joenorwood77 04-20-2015 02:06 PM

So far Spotify has been great today. I am not sure why I stuck with Grooveshark for so long. Well, I know it was to avoid ads but Spotify is pretty slick adding albums to playlists. I do not have to worry about quality of tracks, missing songs, or files not named correctly.

I will be creating playlists for all of the bands on Spotify now (and for the rare ones I cannot do there, I will either use Grooveshark or Youtube). For anyone who wants to participate in this project and wants to use the playlists I set up, go ahead and find me by searching this on Spotify spotify:user:joenorwood77

Hey you've got a great idea!!
Well, G'n'R was one of my favourite bands when I was teen. I don't follow them since they released Use Your Illusion.
My top five fav songs are:

Mr. Brownstone
Think About You
Rocket Queen
You're Crazy (GnR Lies Acoustic Version)
You Ain't The First

Talking about their strengths/weaknesses I can tell you that (IMO of course!) Steven was really better than Matt as drummer, Axl's voice went slowly downhill from the middle of 90's, Slash still kicks ass and Duff too.
And what about Izzy?

Thank you for joining in on the discussion! I strongly prefer the Lies version of You're Crazy. Again, nice to see Rocket Queen in the top 5 for someone! I can't argue with Brownstone on the list either.

Adler was far better than Sorum. His drum flow fit perfectly with the rest of the band on Appetite.

And if I recall right, the correct question (taken from Don't Cry video); "where's Izzy" LOL

Izzy was a solid songwriter for sure.

My bands of the week will eventually be everything from Tiffany to Pantera and everything in between.
