A lot of Dubstep fans would say Skrillex isn't Dubstep though. After about 2008 more and more of this bassy shit was made and that was the stuff that became really well known. There's some of it on Benga's album I mentioned before (26 Basslines). Can't think of single tracks atm, but that style.

I've just put Archangel on (Burial track) and I can hear the clear Garage influence (Step), tbh I'm shit at trying to describe genres effectively, but I would say Burial is definitely stereotypical Dubstep.

Can you hear the similarities between Burial and that (drum pattern) ^

The fact that Skrillex is associated with dubstep is a testament to how things get watered down and crappy once they reach a critical mass. Check out this thread for some great background on the style and for some actual good quality dubstep from back before if became all about cartoonish bass wobbles.

I like John Adams and I can listen to Wagner, but mostly I'm in the same boat.

I can't even distinguish electronica genres apart all i know is i like Boards of Canada and Squarepusher.

YorkeDaddy 04-28-2015 03:10 PM

I remember when I talked about how I had a range of music that I didn't like to listen to and several members spent a week trying to tell me how close-minded I was.

Gee how this forum changes

Hehe you think Skrillex is techno

Frownland 04-28-2015 03:38 PM

I don't listen to much soul or R&B, but I haven't explored the genre much.

I can give you some '60s (and '70s to some extent) soul recs if you want. I like to think I know a decent amount.

I listen to a lot of soul / r&b infused electronic music if you want some recs

Have you even scraped this surface with the essentials? I'd be willing to bet you'd like "What's Going On" quite a bit.

Frownland 04-28-2015 03:48 PM

I know Gaye's music pretty well and I do enjoy it. Just drop whatever recs you people think I'll enjoy. I've tried out Frank Ocean and didn't really dig it that much tbh.

I made you a playlist. It's not really like typical soul/r&b cause I'm not really into that. It's more like... soul/r&b inspired electronic music. The last track has a minute of silence so don't turn it off cause that's my favorite one and there's a hidden track.

Didn't live Frank at first but now I love him. You've listened to Stevie Wonder I have to imagine right?

lndmilla 04-29-2015 12:37 AM

For most times, I don't like to listening to rap music.

10's girl pop mostly grinds my gear for cheap arrangements, trying to sound fun, groovy, but if I had a chance to pull out a bucket to vomit all over, then I guess. Also I have randomly explored more rap and found out it's mostly seeming to be not my cup of tea at all... :|

Usually I also laugh or cringe at a quite of a bunch of electronica, trap, indie by similar channels to The Sound You Need/indiecurrent and other kind of stuff, grindcore and similar to that latter genre. but usually I listen to everything I can

Don't get me wrong, I kind of like 2-3 songs from grindcore anyway :p:

As for girl pop, I don't hate all of it, just that one that is overly mainstream and comes from... around the middle part of 10's, so yeah. Kinda. But I do enjoy Little Mix :p:

Well that would be one of the many I quite do like. May I as well insert Rihanna's "S&M"?

Vocaloid & classical music.

Classical bores me and Vocaloid frightens me, it's like a genre for coked up weeaboos.

I had never heard of Vocaloid until this moment but now I want to write my own music with it.

What genres do you not listen to? Not genres that you don't like, but one's that you just haven't given a chance?

You people in this thread are mentioning a few genres I'm not even sure I've ever heard of. "Trap"... ? No idea what that is! But then, I tend to ignore the more specific genre terms. "Slam" metal is honestly just regular death metal to me, but I don't want to start a genre discussion. I'm just going to approach DeadChannel's question from the angle that I'm only thinking in terms of the major "umbrella"-genres, so...

Opera: I feel like I should give it a fair shake, but every time opera is used in a movie soundtrack I feel compelled to cover my ears :(

Gospel: I'm probably terrible and wrong, but I just never could see it as anything that belonged outside of a religious context, but I guess people really do listen to it at home?

Country: This one doesn't really count since I have tried. I just wanted to say that I really, really dislike country. Very much. Except I guess Neko Case is allright.

Funk, Reggae and Classical: Not by any means suggesting that these genres are all the same, just that I relate to them in the same way. I imagine I could like them all, but I just never tried all that hard and I don't seem to care about the most well known stuff (Bob Marley, Beethoven, what have you). Maybe some obscure stuff would turn me on to any of those three genres.

Metal core or anything similar. I've only listened to 2 albums of the genre and I can say it's not my thing. However I'm still willing to try out other stuff. There is a lot of electronic music that I don't enjoy, like the rougher stuff if that makes sense. I don't know the sub genres enough to say which ones I don't like.

I don't listen to classical and I don't listen to a lot of rap and country but there is still stuff from both genres I like.

But what of Metalcore and music similar have you heard?

I guess I should ask what you don't like about it?

If it's the vocals you can't get passed, you're focusing on the wrong thing and not what makes the genre distinguished and overall better than other sub genre of Metal in general.
